Tyvera the Hag

The myth of Tyvera the Hag originated in the southern areas of the Rienvald Empire. The myth has only existed for twenty or so years and started with the mysterious disappearances of children. A few other similar myths exist in other areas of the Empire.

Summary

Used as a warning to prevent children from wandering off or adventuring in the dark. Parents tell their kids that there is a hag that lives deep within the surrounding forests known as Tyvera. She loves to eat children and she watches them, waiting for one to wander too far from their group or leave the town alone so she can pick them off.

Historical Basis

This story originated around the same time children started disappearing in the night. Some were taken when they wandered too far alone, but many were taken from their beds in the middle of the night. These disappearances were focused on areas towards the edges of the Empire. No one ever saw what took the children, and none ever returned, so the idea that a children-eating hag lives in the forests surrounding the town is most likely a story made up as both an explanation and a way to keep children well behaved.

Spread

The myth, in various different forms, is well spread around the outer edges of the empire. Towards the center however, the myth or any of its variations is rare.

Variations & Mutation

There are many local variations to this story. The one thing they all have in common is children being stolen. But what does the stealing and where that thing lives change from region to region and seems to depend on existing folklore of the region. Each version is fairly localized, but most people who live on the outskirts of the Empire have heard some variation of this tale.
