The Unseelie King

The Unseelie King is the leader of the Unseelie Court in the Feywild. His domain encompasses the dark, tumultuous aspects of nature, and his domain is constantly covered in a blanket of stars. The Unseelie King claims dominion over Autumn and Winter, and his power grows as one ventures closer to the poles. Cold and calculating, the Unseelie King has ruled for as long as anyone can remember. His name is forgotten in myth through his own efforts. Names have power, and a ruler cannot be answering to anyone. The King represents the very concepts of decay and death for the denizens of the material plane, but he is not evil. His will is of change and endings. Without these, nothing would ever progress. His power within the Feywild is rivalled only by the Seelie Queen and her courts of Summer and Spring.

Physical Description

The Unseelie King wears a robe fashioned of shadows and ice. His features are sharp and angular. Any mortal who beholds his visage is struck by his unnatural beauty and grace. His skin is a very pale blue, offset by his onyx eyes and stark white hair. The King typically adorns himself with the bones of vanquished enemies as a mark of pride and power.

History

The origins of the Unseelie King cannot be described in any certainty. One tale tells of how both the Unseelie King and Seelie Queen were spawned simultaneously from Sylvanis, Father of the Wilds while he shaped the natural biomes of the world. According to this telling, Sylvanis created them to maintain balance in the natural world, giving and taking from the mortal races in equal measure. The Seelie Queen was made to represent the chaos, beauty, and energy of nature while the Unseelie King represents change, natural order, and entropy. The two have been at odds since the moment of their birth.   In another tale, the two were elven lovers from a time even before the great city of Myth Deios. They didn't follow the ancient elven creed of subjugating themselves to nature's whims and sought to conquer it. The details are lost to time, but in the end, whether through struggle or godly blessings, they were made into physical manifestations of the natural world, consistently at odds yet forever drawn together. This tale is popular among sailors and those who live in areas frequented by storms. According to these locals, the storms are caused by the passionate and unbridled love the two share when they are together.

Current Reign

The Unseelie King rules with a court of seventeen High Fey, hand-picked by the Unseelie King himself. Five of these court members are representatives of Autumn. The other twelve represent winter. With the natural tendency towards extremes among the fey, the King cannot help but favour winter. His Autumnal courtiers are often sent to deal with the Seelie Queen's Vernal courtiers on the Fields of Equinox for inter-court matters while the Winter courtiers, referred to as the Solstein, make decisions concerning matters within the Unseelie Court.    Below the High Fey are the Midden. These fey creatures are not humanoid; rather, they resemble awakened plants. They serve as attendants to the High Fey, and they hold tremendous power over the lower members of the Unseelie Court. To insult a Midden is to insult one of the High Fey. The cost of this power is that they are, to their very core, unflinchingly loyal to their High Fey patrons.    The lowest ranking members of the Unseelie Court are the Squalids. Those who find themselves here tend to be the ones who cause mischief on the material plane. Goblins, hags, purple mushrooms, and other oddities of nature prefer to spend their time on the Material Plane where they can exert their preternatural influence on the mortal races through boons or curses; however, quite a few do choose to stay in the Feywild because if they serve the Unseelie King well, he has the power to promote and change them into a High Fey should a vacancy arise. It does not happen often in the Unseelie Court, but it is not an opportunity to be missed when it does.
