The Grey Sage
The Grey Sage is the second highest rank in the Balnavian Government; the King being the only person who stands in a higher position of authority than him. Not only does the Grey Sage serve as an advisor and counselor, in the case that the King is unable to produce a natural heir, he will obtain the Throne.
Qualifications
One must have at least two years worth of training in the fields of war, political leadership, and negotiation to hold the rank of Grey Sage.
Requirements
To gain the title of Grey Sage, one must, by law, fill five requirements.
The person in question must: (1) be of noble blood. (2) be at least 20 years of age. (3) have had some type of military and political training prior to ordination. (4) be male. (5) take the Oath of Honor.
Appointment
The ceremony in which the Grey Sage is given the crown is simply called "The Coronation". It is a very festive time, with celebrations lasting for days and sometimes even weeks. There are many feasts and parties, with sacrifices being made almost daily. If the current King is not deceased at the time of the Grey Sage's coronation, he will preside over the festivities, and at the appointed time will crown the incoming King. If he is unable to fulfill this service, the Grey Sage crowns himself.
Duties
The Grey Sage's duties will vary depending on the King he rules under, but he is usually responsible for: advising the King in matters of the State, such as national dangers and military concerns ect., performing services for the King, as well as standing as a heir to the thrown. The Grey Sage is also considered to be in charge of the military and all things concerning that branch of government.
Benefits
The Grey Sage holds great political, as well as monetary, power. He oversees many of the decisions of the King, and depending on how persuasive he is, can lead the country in whatever way he desires.
Accoutrements & Equipment
The Grey Sage wears a gold, signature ring called Athor's Ring because it was the ring given to Athor by the Dragons on the day of his coronation and has been passed down from one Grey Sage to the next for hundreds of generations. The Grey Sage is expected to dress as the Royal Family and to bear the King's Seal upon his vest.
