Kirik

You are angry.   Angry because you cannot forget past grievances.   You have let the memories of what other men did to you simmer in the dark places of your heart.   A terrible lust for revenge has stolen your mind. It is all that you can think of.   Day and night, this horrible, unconquerable desire haunts you.   And now, what was once a hate for those who harmed you, has turned into a hate for everyone.   You imagine that the world is out to take you. No one can be trusted.   Everyone is your enemy.

Personal history

Kirik was born into a slave family and although this was an unfortunate circumstance, he and his family were better off than most lower class free people. His father, Kaith, belonged to Lord Hathrel, Advisor to the King, and The Grey Sage. Kaith was head over all the lord's slaves and household servants, and because of this his family was well to do, considering their situation and social status.   As he grew, Kirik did as all slaves do: obeyed the will of his master. This didn't come naturally for Kirik though. Headstrong and belligerent from his childhood, he found it difficult to knowledge the fact that he was another man's property. Kirik viewed the social system with contempt and as he grew, he developed a deep bitterness against the wealthy and aristocratic.   Perhaps Kirik would have been able to better adjust to the life of a slave, if his master had been a good man. Lord Hathrel, although a man of great knowledge and wealth, was not well learned in the ways of compassion. He understood little the plight of the poor and enslaved and he cared for neither. Lord Hathrel treated his slaves harshly, unjustly, and with no sense of decency or dignity. Although their living conditions were good and they were provided with plenty of food, the work they performed and the treatment they endured was almost inhuman.   Considering the way Lord Hathrel treated his slaves, it is no surprise that they grew discontent and rebellious. In the summer of 598, a handful of the most influential male slaves met together, rallied their fellow sufferers and planned a raid. Although his father was against the scheme, Kirik determined to be a part of the uprising, to show his hate for the lord and all of his injustice. But fate worked against him and on the night of the revolt, Kirik lay in his bed, delirious with fever and unable to get up.   When darkness fell, the slaves gathered. Armed with clubs and knives and broken axes, they purposed once and for all to end their misery that for so many years they had endured. Screaming chants of hate and anger they raided the lord's castle, intent upon murdering him and all his family in their beds. But it was not to be. They were stopped by some wary castle guards before they could enter the lord's chamber and their plan was foiled.   The slaves disbanded in fear, knowing that if they were caught the punishment would be horrible.   The leaders of the uprising were rounded up and brought before their master. Fueled by a senseless rage, Lord Hathrel ordered a death sentence so cruel and heartless, that in years to come it would be remembered as one of the most appalling judgements ever given out by a "civilized" man. The convicted slaves were taken out to the castle's back courtyard where they were separately tied to wooden poles and left there to die of thirst and starvation. Terrible as this was, the worst was yet to come. Hathrel ordered that all the families of the ring leaders were to be rounded up and placed in large, metal cages, (like those used for keeping fowl) and given large doses of Elucain . There, the families would die together in agony, their suffering only increased as they watched their loved ones die a slow and wretched death.   Kirik, his father and mother had no part in the revolt and were thus spared. But Kirik's older sister, a young lass-not yet eighteen summers old- was hauled off to the cages with her two small children. Her husband had led in the uprising and although innocent, she and her babies were forced to pay the price.   For years, Kirik was haunted by the memory of his sister pained face, her body wasting away to nothing. The cries of the children as they writhed in pain; the naked, shriveled corpses piled high as one by one the slaves gave out and died; the awful stench of death surrounding the courtyard.   Kirik never forgot.   And he vows that one day, he will have vengeance.
