The Knight with Foresight

A cautionary children's tale intended to teach the dangers of the power of foresight, frequently shared amongst the towns near the lake of revelation.     There once was a gallant knight who fought bravely to keep the people of his land safe. Sword in hand they challenged monsters, saved royalty and protected the innocent. One day, the knight saved a clan of faeries from a hungry troll, and in their gratitude they offered the knight a wish. "I wish I could see the future, that I can always be where I'm needed," the knight said. The faeries granted the wish, imbuing the knight with the power of foresight. The knight looked at the faeries and saw a vision of themself begging for the gift to be removed. "Pray tell, dear faeries; why do I see myself here once more asking to lose the gift which I just gained?" The faeries smiled and replied in tandem. "Fear not, young knight, for the future is not always guaranteed. Many paths branch forth, you only see the one you're most likely to lead. Make your choices carefully, for the outcome may not always be clear. And whatever you do, be careful with those that you hold dear." The knight nodded, thinking they understood the weight of these words, and carried on his way.    At first, the knight was grateful for their gift. They could see whenever a person would be in danger and could figure out when, making sure to be there to help. But as time went on, more and more often their actions made things worse rather than better. They saw a man trapped in a landslide, and so the knight went up the mountain to clear the path ahead of him. The knight inadvertently started the rockslide that trapped the man whilst they were clearing the higher paths. The knight went to apologise, and found themselves trapped in multiple conversations at once. One where the man was grateful for saving him, another where he was furious for causing the rockslide, and another where he was confused, unable to follow the disparate conversation the knight was having. Trying to answer each conversation in kind, the man ended up as the confused man did, and once saved, he went on his way, avoiding the knight.   These instances increased more and more over time until the knight was having the same conversation multiple times, the person not even yet there, and in doing so grew more and more distant from those they wanted to save. Eventually, unable to do anything, they returned home to their family. What should have been a joyful reunion instead was bittersweet, as the knight looked into their partner's eyes and saw their future together in an instant. Every conversation that could happen, every decision they would make, and inevitably how they could die.    Driven into a frenzy by this accursed gift, the knight returned to the faeries and begged that they remove the gift. The faeries responded solemnly. "We hope you learned your lesson, on the folly of trying to follow fate. Wanting to know to save others is an honourable trait. Yet time is best followed through on its natural track, for when you see all that's ahead you'll have to always look back."
