Mitari (Me-tar-ee)

A subrace of Eltari that were used by the empire of the stars for spying, reconnaissance and assassination, the Mitari are the living embodiment of shadows, capable of shifting in and out of them at will to traverse great distances in short amounts of time, becoming practically impervious to damage and avoiding many physical liabilities. They took the name in reverence to Domitari, one of the eltari generals who fought the kalydrid emperor and ascended to godhood, as they share the same shadowed legacy as them.   The mitari were once known as "shanoduin," or "spectral blades" within the empire and were a closely kept secret by the kalydrid nobles who knew about them. These eltari served little purpose within the maintenance and advancement of the empire directly, but their capability to pass completely unnoticed through large areas of darkness and to disappear nearly as quickly made them perfect for maintaining order without anyone knowing the empire even had their eyes and ears in place.    When they became public knowledge after some defectors joined the budding Eltari uprising, there was a massive amount of uproar from the general populace regarding their existence, leading into stigmas so strong that it could be argued that it's the root of the deep-seated fears most mortals have for the eltari as a whole. Between the persecution and wish to settle down away from the lifestyle they'd been forced to live out, the newly freed, freshly named mitari sought protection from Domitari - somewhere they could be safe from external affairs and left to their own devices. Domitari's solution was simple: to create a near inhospitable landscape encompassed by endless darkness, allowing them to exist within with no risk to themselves and an easy method of travelling, whilst making the area undesirable and unsafe for those who aren't welcome.   With a safe haven to call home, the mitari have flourished, content to remain amongst themselves in isolated conditions, only venturing out and interacting with the outside world when it suits them, allowing them to pursue their own interests with unadulterated zeal.
