Rutar

The Rutar are officially the royal guards of the Kingdom of Phesunlay, protecting its ruler and the Just Halls from outside forces and internal threats. The Rutar are an elite group, with only 150 members at any given time to protect the prestigeĀ of those who make it into their ranks. There are, in truth, only 149 Rutar with the King taking the final spot.

Structure

The Rutar are commanded by the King, who is nominally called the Rutarbrek. Under the Rutarbrek, there are four Rutaranks, each of whom commands 29 other Rutar. While the King also controls 29 Rutar, those are usually divided as an extra 5 auxiliary with the Rutaranks, and then a remaining four as the King's personal guard. Each Rutaranker (the name of the collection of 30 Rutar including their Rutarank) have a specific task at any given time, including protecting the Just Hall, patrolling the Royal Grounds and Upper Preschwall more generally, assisting the Kentasorte, and protecting the Mage Counsel.

Culture

The Rutar, as an elite unit, are quite secretive and are known to have specific rituals and traditions that only they are aware of. Generally, they try to act genial with the public while maintaining a stern face when foreign dignitaries attend. They are extremely well trained and spend hours each day doing drills, rotating between different weapon sets and situations.

Public Agenda

Their public agenda is to protect the King, the Mage Counsel, and the people (in that order).

Assets

Each Rutarank has a designated horn player (who carries a silver horn), two designated message runners (who carry silver note boxes), and a healer.   Each Rutar is equipped with layered leather and ironwood armour, along with a silver-steel breastplate, helmet, boots, and gauntlets. The leather of their armour is dyed dark purple, as are their cloaks. Each Rutar carries a different weapon (within each Rutaranker) and a short or long bow, and the Rutaranks don't carry weapons at all but do weather silver leather gloves instead of gauntlets. Each Rutarank also carries a solid metal staff.   Rutars also have ceremonial dress, which consists of dark purple, fitted leathers dyed dark purple but stitched with silver thread. When in ceremonial garb, Rutars carry cudgells and shortswords. They also wear silver caps, which are emblazened with the Rutar logo in the centre.

History

The Rutar were formed not long before the Great Borean War broke out as a special military force to protect the King. Their work has evolved since then, and they act in a less overt military fashion.
