Mallad Ethnicity in Elotia | World Anvil

Mallad (Maal-add)

The Mallad, also known as the People of the Vale, are descendants of Malltod indigenous people who settled in the Vale. The Malltod no longer exist in the way they once did, with their way of life, cultures, and practices eroded and destroyed by constant oppression by the Vale's rulers and priest caste.

Culture and cultural heritage

The Malltod people first came to the Vale after a schism within the Blaenor. During the epoch of Godswalker, the Blaendor were a semi-nomadic people in the Borean (north) area of Elotia. Largely keeping themselves away from Godlings as they roamed and fought, the Blaenor people eventually settled largely into the areas now controlled by Brist and Konard.   After the Blaenor established more permanent communities, local councils began to discuss planting crops, forests, and other natural resources required to sustain their communities in their static locations. While most were in favour of these changes, some were opposed to making any changes to the natural landscape that did not occur on its own (or at the hands of Godlings, who they were powerless to stop).   Eventually, people who felt this way were pushed to the outskirts of their communities, yet they found community with one another. Many such groups decided to leave their new camps and ran into one another while continuing their nomadic existence. Eventually, they formed their own people (dubbed the Malltod by the Blaenor) and moved away from the areas that the Blaenor sought to change. Largely, they ended up inhabiting the Vale and creating new communities there which relied on what the land had to offer (meagre as it often was).   As the rest of the Vale was inhabited and occupied, the Malltod people opted to keep their communities largely separate. This eventually came to a head when Varenval (as an empire) was formed and sought to exert control over the whole of northwestern Elotia. The armies of Varenval threatened, harmed, and otherwise commited crimes against the Malltod while the priest caste (pre-preot times) began to try and convert the Malltod to the Varenval cultural ideologies.   As a result, the current culture of the Mallad is a combination of Malltod beliefs and practices (such as leaving nature to its own path and only taking what it provides) and Varenval culutral practices (such as the preparation of abidnoi and at least claiming to follow the tenets of the preot belief system).
