Ma'ai Myth in Elotia | World Anvil

Ma'ai

The ghost town of Ma'ai is a real location, but the legend surrounding the town prevents even those who can get to its ruins from venturing into the forgotten settlement.   According to local lore, Ma'ai was a Kukul settlement that focused on fishing and trapping, creating beautiful Kukul clothing out of animal hide and generally thriving despite its isolation along the northwestern coast of what is now Endref, along the Siblin Sea. This Kukul settlement often traded with the Zagash to the north and brought their wares to trade with other Kukul settlements located throughout Laummamor and the rest of Endref.    Howver, after a particularly hot True Summer one eoch, the people of Ma'ai began to be seen less and less and these trades and the Zagash, who stopped at an established meeting spot near where the walls of the Latch now stand, were left waiting for days before being finally greeted by only a small party from Ma'ai who refused to speak about why they were late. Eventually, the Zagash were left waiting for so long on one occasion that they left and began to trade with another Kukul settlement. Ma'ai members were also not seen at trade events at all for a full eoch, causing other Kukul to wonder what had happened to the town.    Several Kukul eventually decided to investigate, including a two talaleo who lived in settlements east of Ma'ai. While the journey to Ma'ai was difficult without a guide who knew the best paths to take, they eventually reached the town, seeing it from a distance as they exited out of the treeline and walked toward the shore. But, before they could get too close, the party stopped and one talaleo went along to investigate.    It is said that what he found drove him to abandon his village after a time and live sequestered in the mountains among the Zagash. What he found was the bodies of all of the Ma'ai overtaken by a climbing fungal rot which was apparent throughout every home and every building. The village's well, which provided the only fresh water for miles around, was also infested with the rot, potentially the source of the fungus in the Ma'ai. The fungus itself, which had a washed purple hue and a fuzzy, cilia-like surface, made a soft noise when the wind blew through the village. The two talaleo, in conversation with the others who found the town, decided to burn the village and the bury it beneath the sands of the shore (using magic since the fungus itself seemed resistant to magic). It is said that the talaleo who did not find the bodies re-visited the site one eoch after the event and he found that the fungus had come through the surface of the sand, and so he torched the area again and covered the once-sandy shore in thick, plate-like rock.
