Loche Acen

In Konard, privacy and self-reliance are highly valued as societal norms. Individuals as well as communities are often secluded or limited in their interactions outside of their direct family. However, for one moon of every year, the people of Konard gather and celebrate a night of secrets, of revelry, and of mischief. Loche Acen, or "Bright Nights" in common, is celebrated on the All Moon of Cool Winter when all three moons and the darker star are in the sky.   During this time, the sky is awash with bright waves of colours, and given the lower light level differences, it is more difficult to tell night from day. While some nations celebrate the illuminated sky, the nation of Konard instead celebrates the isolation of the darker star. The isolation of the darker star is seen as a representation that isolation is needed to cause joint celebration. This darker star is called the Riedwiere by the people of Konard, and so this festival is also sometimes known as Herinn Riedwiere.   During the Bright Nights festival, every Konardian village holds a celebration, though a much larger celebration is also held in Haadstige which attracts residents from throughout Konard. The celebration is marked by the placement of stone bowls filled with bio-luminescent moss throughout the village, creating an eerie blue-grey glow beneath the vibrant sky as all candles and other light sources are extinguished. The moss bowls are meant to represent the Riedwiere, which glows a softer blue-white colour compared to the fierce yellow-blue of the primary sun. Throughout the festival, Konardians are encouraged to tell each other secrets (whether they be true or false) and engage in activities which are normally frowned upon by the society. This can range from orgies (in the most extreme cases) to law-breaking and other mischief. During Bright Nights, as long as such actions do not harm another resident, wide leeway is given.   In Haadstige, Bright Nights begins with the kleed, where the members of the Ried and the Halden all ceremonially remove their robes of office and place crowns of the glowing moss on their heads. They then step down from a raised platform before the Ried give their crowns to the new members of the Ried and the Halden place their crowns on the heads of random guests. These random guests are called the Hel-Halden, and they are given free drinks for the night. On the last night of Bright Nights, the unkled, the new Ried are brought back on the raised platform and they throw the crowns into a ritual fire before donning their robes of office.
