Iwan Siard Character in Elotia | World Anvil

Iwan Siard

Head Strider Iwan Cerd Siard

Iwan Siard is the current Head Strider of the Meslin Map Company and the fourteenth Head Strider since Meslin's established the role shortly before his retirement. His role at the Meslin Map Company includes investigating areas of Elotia that have not been exhaustively covered by the MMC and to verify any reliable claims of significant changes which may require the MMC to create new editions of existing texts.

Mental characteristics

Education

Iwan was raised in the Canopies, taught to be a druid by the educators of Brist. Iwan was generally unremarkable in his time in the Canopies, though he showed early interest in leaving the school grounds and exploring the countryside.

Employment

Iwan currently works as the Head Strider for the Meslin Map Company, a role which he was granted after working for the Emerald Crown, the Longstrider's Rest, and the MMC for over fifty eochs combined. While the past Head Strider was extremely selective in their trips, spending more time validating information and sending others to confirm bits of information, Iwan has taken on a travel-heavy role and often travels around Elotia to investigate himself.

Accomplishments & Achievements

Iwan is close to becoming an Emiger and is considered to be the most likely to reach this rank, if the Varenval Empire ever allows outsiders to visit Nimb again. Iwan is one of the few Striders to have travelled through Xzon (rather than simply entering it and then leaving it), escorting a rare group of diplomats from the Langhir down the Matipenguns and into Phesunlay before travelling back through Xzon (at their request) to deliver them to the northern reaches of Leaait (for reasons unknown).

Failures & Embarrassments

Iwan was widely expected to be named the thirteenth Head Strider in MMC history, but Iwan got into a "philosophical disagreement" with the current Chief Publisher of the MMC around that time. Specifically, Iwan attempted to convince the publisher that the MMC should spend more money directly funding expeditions to different reaches of Elotia rather than relying on ad-hoc information gathering by Striders and other employees who were engaged in other work. Only after the 13th Head Strider refused to travel on nearly any trips herself, and new book publications slowed to a crawl, did the Chief Publisher acquiesce to his point of view.
