Hession Drest Character in Elotia | World Anvil

Hession Drest

Hession Drest is one of the most famous historical figures in the Borean, and generally throughout Laerdt'nah. Hession is widely known as the main person who orchestrated the end of the Great Borean War, and he is revered as a both a symbol of bravery, strength, and determination, but also as a shrewd and compassionate man who valued life above the pursuit of glory.   Little is verified about Hession's life before he joined the Mage Counsel. While the Phes village of Andrewil claims to be his birth place, this has never been fully confirmed. What is know is that Hession was borne to a relatively poor family who had little money and who lived far away from Upper Preschwall. When he was young, Hession was sold by his parents to a local mercenary company as payment for killing a wolf den that was threatening their fields and crops. From that point on, when Hession was around 9 years old, he was raised in and by the mercenary company, learning of their ways and acting as a stable boy, squire, and all around assistant for all of their needs. The group treated Hession better than many would have, but the work remained difficult and Hession grew into a relatively stoic man. By age 23, he had become the captain of their mercenary company, and his work took him throughout the Borean nations.   At one time, not long after Hession became the captain, their band was hired to bring a young mage (around Hession's age) to Upper Preschwall to become an initiate of the Mage Counsel. However, something happened along the way and the young mage was killed. When Hession came to the Counsel chambers to relay this news, he was instead mistaken for the initiate himself. As he had the man's papers on him, the Counsel did not ask many questions as they commenced the formalities of the process before Hession could fully understand what was happening. From that day forth, Hession became an initiate of the Mage Counsel.   While he did not know that he had any specific magic abilities, Hession applied himself thoroughly and the Mage's mistook his real inexperience for the fumblings of a rich person taught by a hired (rather than a professional) tutor. Eventually, Hession was found out by one of the youngest full Mages, Oslo, but Oslo agreed to keep his secret under some unknown conditions. Hession's self-application eventually earned him full Mage status, less than an eoch before the Great Borean War began. The Mage Counsel was sent to the front lines to advise the king and to act when necessary, and Hession proved himself an apt strategist and someone who was able to avoid death in his planning.    At some point during the war, Hession's secret was revealed by Oslo and an emergency meeting of the Mage's Counsel was called, but they deferred any decisions until after the war. After this meeting, Oslo and a few other mages revealed their plans and acted against the king, forcing some of the other mages to rely on Hession. Hession was eventually able to secure Oslo's surrender, and he also helped the king arrange for a peaceful treaty between the three nations. For his work, and for his avoidance of bloodshed wherever possible, the peace treaty was named after Hession.
