The Bloodmoon Rebellion

A Rebellion that shook mankind to its core

"It was horrifying. First, we had to deal with the rebels slaughtering and butchering us en masse and when the beasts from the dark realms arrived, we were utterly decimated. Had it not been for the Undead Legion, the entire Imperium would have been doomed"   An Imperial Commander, giving a firsthand account of the Bloodmoon Rebellion"
The Bloodmoon Rebellion was one of the most devastating conflicts the Imperium had been embroiled in, before the start of The Great War. Believed to be caused by the discrimination of the Imperium against the natives of The Bloodmoon Islands and looting their natural resources without giving them any shares, the war was particularly brutal, especially in the last stages when the deranged cult known as the "Sons of the Holy Abomination" began to indiscriminately butcher anyone that were not on their side, be they rebel or imperial.   In the end, the rebel faction lead by Rayner Nilsson, one of the original leaders of the rebellion signed a truce with the Imperium to combat the threat of the cultists and the nightmarish creatures that had joined them. The Undead Legion was particularly renowned in this fight as it had lead the offensive against the cultists and in the end, it was the undead legion commander who slayed the mutated leader of the cultists, albeit at the presumed cost of his own price.   The War had many repercussions for the Imperium and yet, the lessons learnt from it were invaluable. The Imperium finally began cooperating with the bloodmoon islanders, and started to develop the islands and invest in various development projects. Bloodmoon Islanders were also inducted into various posts in the government, in an appeasement policy to win over the hearts and minds of the islanders and also to genuinely help them out in the future. Every year, the bloodmoon rebellions anniversary is celebrated not because of the fact that the bloodmoon islanders wanted to secede but in the light of the fact that in the end, the rebels and the Imperium united to fight against a greater evil   In recent times, the topic has sprung up again due to the ominous similarities between the cultists of that rebellion and the current "Church of Arkanos". The war may contain things that will benefit not just the Imperium, but all of Elladia when the storm will eventually come

The Conflict

Prelude

"The Rebellion did not begin out of a vacuum. It was the consequence of oppressing and looting us at all times no matter where we were. Be it from the lowliest clerk to the most honourable of knights, we were always discriminated against. Even in The Undead Legion, we had to go through abuse. I hope that we all can learn from this and try our best to cooperate and unite with each other"   Rayner Nilsson, one of the chief leaders of the rebellion speaking to his imperial counterpart during the signing of the peace treaty
The Bloodmoon Islands were known for their plentiful resources from ages. Metals and other heavy materials were to be found aplenty on the archipelago whilst it also had many other resources found nowhere else in the Imperium. This was possibly the biggest incentive the Imperium had for sucking the islands dry of their resources.   When the Imperium was unified at long last, the Bloodmoon Islands became a part of Tenebria due to it being considered the kingdom of the undead. This did not stop the tenebrians from looting the islands hand in hand with the wider Imperium. The blatant and widespread looting of the islands resources was one of the key sparks that helped contribute to fuel the anger of the islanders   The Second Big Blow came due to the racial policies of the Imperium. The Bloodmoon Islanders, though technically being ethnic Tenebrian Undead were quite different from their continental brethren. Their Language was more like a creole of Tenebrian and Arvallian. This was reflected in their culture and religion as well, where they worshipped several natural objects claiming them to be a manifestation of Nocturna or Thanatos. This, whilst not against the core tenets of Sanctus Noctis and also being quite acceptable, raised eyebrows amongst the wider undead society. Consequently, they were deemed heretics and witches and constantly discriminated against in every walk of life from civil jobs to military duty   Last but not least, came the destruction of various monuments unique and very important to the Bloodmoon Islanders. Due to the Undead and also the rest of the Imperium thinking that it was worth it to smash the monuments of the "heretics" and make room for development, many unique monuments with rich cultural heritage were destroyed mindlessly. This had arguably struck at the core of the bloodmoon islanders, which had spurred them into action

Whispers of a Rebellion

"We only want to end this peacefully. Despite all the harm the wider Imperium has done to us, we are still open for talks. I assure everyone that we will not take up arms unless it is in self defence"   Lorena Nilsson, the sister of Rayner Nilsson and the founder of the "Sjallan Development Front" party that advocated for the rights of the Bloodmoon Islanders ( called Sjallans in their language)
Around a few years before the rebellion began, a political party was formed by a group of well educated bloodmoon islanders, the chief of which were Lorena Nilsson, an educated girl who had served as a scientist in various imperial science and research institutions. Lorena had wanted to educate her brethren as much as possible so that they could hold up their demands more efficiently and have a better standard of living.   The Party found immense support amongst the bloodmoon islanders as well as many other people who were sympathetic to the islanders plights across the Imperium. It became the most dominant party in the bloodmoon islands, with them enjoying immense popularity as well as near unconditional support from the public.   Naturally, the Imperium had viewed them as a threat and tried their best to counter them in as many ways as possible. From framing key leaders for crimes they didn"t even commit to launching a gigantic propaganda campaign maligning the goals of the party. Over time, the methods began to become more violent and ruthless, which resulted in some violent clashes between Imperial law enforcement and the islanders

Holy Sepulcher Massacre

"It was.... a bloodbath. I could see nothing but blood and bits of gore and flesh floating on them. I did nothing but just sit there and cry after it was all over. No one, not even the most sadistic killer should be killed in the way my brethren were killed" Rayner Nilsson, giving a firsthand account of the Holy Sephulcher massacre
The Holy Sephulcher massacre is generally considered to be the event that was the main spark for the rebellion. It takes its name from a religious holiday of the Sanctus Noctis faith, which is usually a time of celebration and merriment. The massacre was part of the wider purge known as the "Night of the Void" in which senior leaders of the Sjallan development front were either arrested or murdered alongside many other people who were "suspected" to be inciting turmoil   The massacre took place in the largest cathedral of the archipelago, in which Imperial forces arrived by the thousands and began to indiscriminately kill the parishioners, accusing them of plotting a rebellion. Despite the best of efforts of the parishioners as well as Bloodmoon Islanders elsewhere to resist, most of them were killed in various brutal ways. Some of the Bloodmoon Islanders who were serving in the law enforcement and the military tried their best to protect their brethren but alas, their efforts were in vain

The Rebellion Begins

For millenia, we have suffered under the horrible opression of the Imperiums rulers. I feel sad for my brethren in the Imperium who are sympathetic to us but this is a necessary sacrifice. The time has come to free our nation from this tyrannical one! We shall fight until the last drop of blood is shed from our bodies! Our lives for Thanatos and Nocturna!"   Rayner Nilsson, delivering his famous speech that stirred up the archipelago to war
After the Holy Sephulcher massacre, the entire archipelago had erupted into rebellion. Imperial security forces were attacked everywhere and many if not most of the Bloodmoon Islanders serving in the security forces deserted their positions, looted the armories and began waging action to drive out the Imperial forces from the islands. The Bloodmoon Rebellion had started

Battlefield

The Battlefield consisted of numerous different landscapes, ranging from green fields and valleys to icy mountain passes, snow fields, volcanic landscapes and magical crystal ridden domains. This had led to a wide variety of warfare where both sides tried to concentrate their efforts on doing their best in a certain field whilst trying to just hold whatever territory they had in other parts. It varied from faction to faction however, as the rebels were eager to just get their freedom in any way possible and thus often used literally every tactic up their sleeves.

Conditions

The Conditions on the Battlefield varied but in general, it was nightmarish for both sides, especially for the Imperium. The Bloodmoon Islanders took advantage of their knowledge of the terrain to quickly turn the tide against many imperial formations and whilst the Imperium had the superior numbers and technology, they could not keep up with practically the entire archipelagos population turning against them. The climate ranged from pleasant grassy plains to cold icy tundra landscapes and desolate volcanic wastelands. Each of these climates posed a unique challenge to both sides as well as allowing them to use the terrain to their tactics once they had a detailed understanding of the conditions of the battlefield

The Engagement

Initial Stages

During the Initial stages of the Rebellion, the resistance was mostly informal and unorganized. The Civilians, combined with defectors from the forces offered irregular but stiff resistance, with their goals being geared towards protecting the population from further attacks by the security forces. They also looted armories and distributed weapons and gear amongst the general populace, in the hopes that they would contribute to the resistance movement as well   As days went by, the rebellion began to take a much more organized form with professional soldiers leading attacks whilst Irregular militia consisting of the civilians carried out disruptive activities. Rayner Nilsson, the chief leader of the rebellion, looked mostly to the military parts whilst his sister Lorena did the civil administration part, proving herself to be a master administrator and bureaucrat. Large parts of the Archipelago went into the hands of the rebels and by the second week of the rebellion most of the archipelago was in rebel hands except for a few areas such as parts of the interior of Silmador Island. The Rebels had won the first part of the war

The Imperial Counterattack

"It was a nightmare. I could see the ships sinking and burning left and right. The Rebels knew every last detail about the fleet. We should have known and expected better of them"   A survivor of the imperial fleet that was sunk whilst trying to conduct an amphibious invasion of the archipelago
Over on the mainland, the Imperium was taken completely by surprise that they were kicked out so easily out of the islands by what they regarded as angry miners with pickaxes. The Imperium immediately mobilized its Northern Fleet and made a contingent dedicated solely to capturing and guarding the bloodmoon islands. The battlegroup consisted of around 40,000 soldiers not counting cavalry and battlemages. They had set off for the bloodmoon islands, thinking that it would be a walk in the park conquering them once they had established a foothold and linked up with the imperial forces on the islands   What they met with was a nightmarish barrage of siege projectiles and a wall of impregnable defences made by the rebels. The Bloodmoon Islanders had looted practically the entire siege inventory of the Imperial garrison on the archipelago and used them to devastatingly attack the Imperial fleet whilst sheltered by rocky cliffs and coves. The Bloodmoon Islanders also used fortifications to conceal their presence as well as protect them from returning fire, which contributed tremendously to their ability to take the fleet by surprise.   After the naval debacle, some of the fleet managed to land their troops but met with nightmarishly stiff resistance right from the very start. In the end, the rebels killed sixty percent of the entire force and took the rest prisoners, whilst also looting their ships and everything else for anything valuable they could find

The Rebel Invasion

"Regulus on a pointy cross, are they attacking us now? Its dreadful to hear about this. I mean we do have the upper hand in almost every place from numbers to quality but somehow, they still keep beating us. I think the best bet for us now would just be to imitate them and flood our ports and coastal areas with defences"   Laura Christiansen, a high ranking Imperial Navy admiral reacting to the news of the Rebel Invasion
On the other hand, with their recent victory, the rebels began to expand their operations. To put pressure on the Imperium to give in to their demands, the rebels began launching raids and small scale amphibious assaults on the mainland, increasing their scale over time. Under the command of Lorena"s lover Markus Olafsson, a distinguished naval officer in the imperial navy who had defected, the rebels enjoyed numerous successes. The Imperium, despite trying its best did not succeed much in defending the coastlines and in a few rare instances, some towns and cities on the coastline were captured by the rebels. However, the Imperium was not intending to give up and eventually managed to take back the towns and cities as well as making an effort to combat the Imperium. Little did they know, a far darker and deadlier threat was going to emerge

The Darkness Rises

"Something in my mind was always telling me, that there was something wrong with Markus. I found him to be a loving and noble man but how he came to do such heinous acts is something i will never know. To think that he would deal with the devil out of all things, it surely didn"t cross my mind"   A tear ridden Lorena, speaking to her brother about her lover turning on the rebels and the Imperium
Back at the islands, something mysterious was going on. From the very start of the rebellion, Markus had been butchering Imperial prisoners of war, mutilating their bodies and carrying them off to a certain place. He had also been spending increasingly large amounts of time in his "private matters" and didn"t let even Lorena join him, which was strange considering how he always talked to her first and sometimes only her about many sensitive issues.   Lorena had discussed this with her brother during dinner one night, and Rayner, suspecting that something was wrong decided to investigate. He began tailing Markus, and found out many notes and scribblings telling of a greater plan. These plans were detailed, but all had one certain goal "To Restablish the sovereignty of the Holy Lord of the void and unleash the eternal divine punishment among the heretics". It had confused Rayner at first. There wasn"t anything known as the void in existence as far as anyone knew, and despite Regulus being the chief god of the Human pantheon, he was not the only one.   Eventually, it would lead him to the truth. One night, he managed to tail Markus underneath a secret passage in the rebel headquarters. Rayner had almost thrown up when he saw bits of gore and the innards of various people strewn about the passageways, disfigured in horrifying ways. He saw Markus praying at an Altar dedicated to what seemed like a monstrosity of a deity, depicted as trampling and crushing the skull of Regulus. Hans had tried to escape and report back to the others but he was stopped by a tall, slender and sinister looking faceless figure. Markus had greeted him and explained how he was convinced that "Lord Arkanos" was the one and only god worthy of worship . He then also gave Rayner a chance, either join the ranks of the "chosen ones" or become part of the steaming pile of corpses that every "heretic" is bound to become.   Rayner managed to somehow escape and battle his way out, only to find the headquarters littered with mutilated corpses. He found more of those demonic faceless creatures and some of them were eating the remains of their victim. Rayner fought his way through them till he found his sister Lorena and a few others fighting off some of those creatures, whom he helped finish off.   After they were done with battling, the team sat down to discuss the events that had unfolded. Rayner told them everything he knew which surprised everyone but most of all, Lorena. She couldn"t believe her lover could do such heinous acts in a sane mind. However, she knew that this was not the time for crying, for there were far deadlier matters at hand

The Carnage Begins

"What we have seen, is something that is truly alien and evil. A monstrosity that not even the darkest corners of the world could breed. If we are to stand any chance against it, we have no choice but to unite. I know this hurts on so many levels because of the oppression we endured but if we don"t stand up to it, we will all be part of the pile of corpses that i have seen in that passage"   Rayner Nilsson, giving a speech on the alliance between the Imperium and the Rebels
Across the entire islands, there were reports of strange demonic monsters as well as some humans attacking the rebels and anyone that was not them. The rebels objectives had shifted from their previous ones to containing and defeating the nightmarish new threat that had popped up. They knew that this was a completely alien and horrifying threat, and they knew that a darker fate awaited all of them   Meanwhile, under the cover of the darkness and aided by the fact that the Rebel navy was busy containing the cultists, an Imperial armada made its way to Silmador island but were immediately set upon by the cultists and their demonic masters. The Imperium had not expected this out of all things whilst fighting the rebels, and though they fought valiantly like the heroes of old, this was something that defied explanation. A threat that was utterly alien and nightmarish, one that thirsted for the blood of elladians. After only a few hours, the Imperial force numbering around twenty thousand were reduced to just 4000, before they were rescued by a rebel force lead by Rayner and Lorena.   Rayner and Lorena had wanted to meet with the Imperial commander, who had turned out to be none other than the commander of The Undead Legion, Elias Maltoran but were stopped by some guards.Though initially hesitant to let a "traitor" into the company of their commander, they agreed to do so after some silver tongued words by Lorena and also being reminded of the fact that they were saved by them. During their meeting with him, Rayner and Lorena explained him to the best of their ability about the death cult and their demonic masters, as well as the importance of a truce to fight against these beings.   Though even more hesitant at first, Elias agreed and relayed this information to his superiors. Whilst also expressing rage and hesistancy at first, they agreed to officially sign a truce and thus, for the first time in the war, the Imperium and the rebels were reunited

The Imperium strikes back

"This will be the day the demons fall! These foul creatures have no place on Elladia. By the might of Regulus, Nocturna and all of the gods, we shall emerge victorious!"   A speech given by Elias before a large battle between the demons and the combined forces
With them being unified, the rebels and Imperium started their operations against the Demonic forces. The Ports had also become free for reinforcements due to their reunification, and they ensured a steady supply of reinforcements from the mainland. Whilst the demons summoned some sea monsters and mounted amphibious attacks on the fleets, these were beaten back with acceptable losses and thus, the demons began to lose ground. As the unified force went deeper into the island however, the demonic forces increased in their ferocity and strength and they were encountering deadlier types of demons.   Eventually, it would lead them to the place where it all started

The Final Battle Begins

"This will be it. The day we finally managet to banish these dark beasts from our world forever! For Regulus and his children!"   Rayner Nilsson, before charging into the battle of Frostmourne Fortress
After most of the Demonic forces were cleared from the archipelago, albeit at a horribly large cost to the unified forces, they had arrived at the gates of the rebel headquarters where it all began. High in the mountains, amidst a land of eternal ice and snow, they were battling nightmarish creatures from another realm. But they were determined, for this would possibly mean the end of the darkness for eternity.   The battle was gigantic, and entailed the largest clash the Imperium had ever seen in its Far Northeast. Tens of thousands of soldiers held their ground aggressively against the tide of demons, whilst knights and undead legion champions sliced their way through the hordes. All was looking good for the Imperium, until the apostle himself arrived. With his arrival, came the very strongest of the demonic legions, born in the void and shaped by it. With their arrival, the tide began to turn, and it was upto one man to save everything from being razed down by the legions of Arkanos

The Demonic Apostle Arrives

"So, it was you that was causing all of these problems eh? The one dude responsible for all this misery and pain?   "You accuse me of causing misery and pain? Who was it that sucked the islanders dry for millenia? Who was it that oppressed them for millenia as well? Who was it that promoted a national hate campaign against the poor people of this archipelago? I"m not causing misery. I am merely here to end it"   "Well then explain the stuff about the mutilated corpses and you worshipping your twisted god. I would rather die than bow to such a god!"   An exchange of words between Elias and Markus before they battled
Elias had directly cut his way through to the ranks of Markus and his champions. Beside him were many veterans of the legion, who had seen through many wars and were a living conduit of shadow energy. Markus and Elias exchanged some words, as he revealed how he would finally create a world of true peace and prosperity and throw off the yokes of Imperial oppression. This was followed by Elias rebuking him, before engaging him and his champions in combat   Over the course of the battle, the undead legion veterans and demonic champions were all slain until only Elias and Markus remained. Markus was severly wounded, with him bleeding from many cuts as well as having a large gaping stab wound. Before Elias could finish him off however, Markus revealed his true form and suddenly transformed into a titanic demon. This was Zaratian, one of the high commanders of Arkanos himself and the one who had corrupted Markus in the first place.   He then revealed how it was all a ploy to spread the rule of Arkanos over the entire universe and how he would finally get back his position as its master. After finishing his speech, he tried to stomp on Elias but the undead legion commander dodged it and did something that he hadn"t done in his lifetime. Call on the raw powers of Umbra himself   After transforming into Umbra, who was one of the archangels of Thanatos and the one who was behind the birth of the legion, he battled with Zaratian. The battle killed practically everything nearby, and even the sky beasts weren"t safe as they took to the skies to battle it out. Eventually, Zaratian began to open a rift in the sky, in the hopes of bringing in the entirety of the forces of Arkanos to the world but was stopped by a mighty attack from Umbra, mortally wounding him. His wings detached and the wounds dripping with blood, Zaratian fell down to the ground   In the ground, Elias whilst still in the form of Umbra saw that Markus had separated from Zaratian, having finally overcome the demon due to him being injured heavily by the combat. Before he could finish off Zaratian, he tried to kill the Undead Legion commander in one last attack, this time suicidal in order for him to not break out the truth of Arkanos to everyone. Whilst it failed to kill him and obliterated Zaratian, Elias was sucked into the void through the resulting rift and Markus was terribly wounded. It was all over. Mankind had won against the demonic forces

The Aftermath

"Markus no. Don"t leave me. Its all over, just please don"t"   "I wish i could. Alas, Thanatos calls me to his realm. My wounds cannot be cured, and the crimes i did, i think i deserve to die for that"   "You fucking dont!" I promise to sell my soul to him if he wants. I just don"t want to lose you"   Alas, i can"t survive. The Wounds are too much for my feeble body to handle. As the story of my life ends, i just want to say that you are quite simply the most beautiful person i have ever seen. I do truly love you. Please take care of my brothers and sisters. Thank you for everything you have given me"   Markus, talking to Lorena and kissing her during his dying moments
In the immediate aftermath, everything was desolate. Markus lay bleeding there, spending the last few moments of his life in an odd peace knowing that the evil was gone. He was eventually found by Rayner and Lorena, who had broken down into tears seeing her lover in a state like that. He told her to look after the islands inhabitants well, and that he did truly love her.   It was a loss that transcended words and emotions for Lorena. She had lost her most intimate companion, alongside so many others in the rebellion. She just sat there and cried, whilst Rayner tried to console her to no avail. She knew that what transpired here would be in the minds of everyone for eternity. And they had the responsibility to make sure nothing like this ever happened again

Outcome

The Islands and its inhabitants were ravaged. Everywhere, one could find corpses mutilated in horrifying ways. This was the fate for the majority of the islanders, and it took them many years to get their population levels back to the normal. In addition, the entire archipelago was at the risk of famine, due to farms and storages being looted and burnt by the cultists. Everywhere, one could just find death and destruction   To the Bloodmoon islanders hpwever, nothing could compare to the loss of life and culture they had. Many monuments were completely destroyed, something which could be never repaired. The loss would go on to haunt them even millenia after the war ended, and they swore to protect the few remaining relics with all the strength they had.

Aftermath

The Rebuilding

"We shall never forget, what has transpired here. I promise, that we shall work to the best of our abilities to give everyone in the Bloodmoon Islands the oppurtunities and rights they deserve. We admit our problems and promise to work towards them"   Then Emperor Johan Christiansen, apologizing to the Bloodmoon Islanders and promising them to start developing their region
The Rebellion had finally knocked some sense in the Imperiums mind. They were horrified at the death and destruction, and pledged to develop the Islands as well as give their people equal oppurtunities.   In the following years, the Imperium did a wonderful job of restoring and developing the archipelago as well as raising the living standards. Lorena had become the governor of the islands, whilst Markus became commander of the Imperial garrison. Under Lorena"s skilled leadership with resources flowing in from the Imperium, she developed the archipelago to an incredibly high extent. More educational institutes were opened, the island became self sufficient in food production and with a highly skilled labor fource and her wits at her disposal, she exploited the economic conditions and thus the incomes began to skyrocket   In only a few years, the islands were completely changed. The place had become a veritable utopia, and were cashing in on their natural beauty to earn even larger amounts of revenue. In the end, Lorena was happy. She could finally see children smiling in the streets and hugging her for her tireless service for them. Despite Markus' death still picking at her mind, she could at least be happy that her fellow islanders were happy at long last. Their dream was finally achieved.

Historical Significance

Legacy

The War left a huge impact on the populaces minds. It became part and parcel of their history and was indeed, the most important historical event for them. Every year, the end of the war is commemorated as a festival where people rejoice, as it brought a new era for them in their long journey.

The Darkness Returns

"I was there. I saw what those sick fucks could do to others. These people are the same. Worshipping the same twisted god. For all that is holy, you have to do something!"   I know. Its just horrifying how rapidly they have spread and evolved. We need to know more about the root however. About this "Arkanos" himself. Unless we have a clear idea whom we are fighting against, we are all just swinging swords blindfolded
Nearly 7000 years after the war ended, the demons would come back to haunt Lorena again. With the recent events on the archipelago, Imperial intelligence officers have noticed some similarities between that cult and the current "Church of Arkanos", which though less prone to killing people had still committed a series of gruesome murders throughout the Imperium. Despite the organisation being banned and listed as a criminal organization, they continue to fight against the Imperium from the shadows.   These recent events have made Lorena and her brother quite troubled. They ponder at the striking similarities, and are sure that there is a certain connection. They must help the emperor and his allies to uncover long lost secrets, battle against their guardians and reveal who Arkanos is.   For the nightmare is about to return. And this time, it will make the cultists 7000 years ago look like a small raiding party, and raze Elladia to the ground and enslave the remains for all eternity
