Ignion Island
"Its a place where not even mosses and lichens grow. The ground pulsates with the rage of the volcanoes and the sky is charred black from the ashes of those fiery mountains. However, we must survive here. For man does not retreat in the face of danger. Rather, he always charges headfirst into the danger and eventually stands victorious upon it"> Lord Commander Ignius Loramsson, talking to a batch of new recruits on Ignion island.Ignion Island is the largest and the most dangerous island in the Firestorm Islands- a group of volcanic islands located close to the continent of Ultima Borealis. Dotted with volcanoes, this island is a nightmarish place to live in considering the climate and harsh geography. The only inhabitants of this island other than the numerous beasts and humans are the dreaded fire draconians, who agressively attack any human being on sight without any provocation. Despite this however, the island has a huge human presence consisting mostly of soldiers, scientists and mining workers who exploit the islands rich mineral resources. It also serves as a training ground for imperial soldiers, where they train to fight in harsh volcanic environments. For those that live here, life is a constantly unpredictable cycle of discipline and courage, as they fight on new frontiers against enemies in a hostile land. Just like the rest of Elladia, the humans on Ignion island are witnessing a corruption spreading through them. Not only are attacks by the fire saurians increasing, there have been reports of fire draconians being able to use purple flames and glowing purple in colour. The humans keep having nightmares about "Arkanos" and often hear him whispering into their minds when they are awake. The biggest worry is that the island has been becoming more and more violent. The volcanoes are erupting at a much more frequent rate and Mount Doomfire, the tallest volcano and mountain on the island is showing signs of much more violent activity, possibly signalling a major eruption. Those on Ignion must put their skills to good use. The ground will break under from them, and fiery nightmares will confront them. They must hold their ground at all costs. Lest they suffer a fate far worse than the cold embrace of death
Geography
"The land is desolate all around here. The sky is dark, filled with ash from the mouth of those fiery mountains. Rivers of fire flow through this place, their heat melting even the strongest of irons. To survive here, is a battle in of itself." Lord Commander Ignius Loramsson, talking about the desolateness of the islandIgnion island is a large, volcanic island located only a hundred or so kilometres from the Borealian continent but hundreds of kilometres from the nearest port on Inaria. The landscape is desolate and scarred, with volcanic ridges, lava lakes and rivers dotting the landscape. Heavy winds often blow here and uproot tents, forcing the human populace to build more permanent structures made of stone. Large beasts roam the lands, hungering for the flesh of humans and fire saurians alike. The sky is a deep shade of red and grey, with volcanoes constantly spewing ash into the sky.
Mountains of Fire
"The mountains spat fire from their mouths, like a dragon burning its prey before feasting on it. I pity the poor person who has had to die from falling into a volcano if such a person ever existed. Burning to death sure sounds like a painful one" An excerpt from the journal of Balviran Grolkirus, a soldier stationed on Ignion island.Ignion island is filled with large volcanoes that constantly spew ash and fire into the sky. Oftentimes, the insides of the volcanoes are filled with dangerous beasts and at the very center of the volcano, a dragon often makes its lair, guarded by its fire saurian minions. The Mountains hold incredible importance for both scientists and miners. Volcanic rocks and ash may contain key clues to the past of Elladia and reveal many things about the early days of the planet, prompting geologists to put all their energy and resources to get samples of volcanic rocks. The areas around the volcanoes are often filled to the brim with minerals and resources which are eyed for by the miners. Many of the largest mines on the island are established around these regions which are looked after at every second by the Imperial soldiers stationed on the island, guarding them from the attacks of fire draconians and their dreaded warbeasts. A rather odd resource seems to be the volcanic ash. Imperial scientists have found that the ash contains many minerals necessary for healthy plant growth and can act as a potent fertilizer. Further experiments are being carried out to asses the feasibility of transporting volcanic ash to other arid regions in the Imperium and boost crop growing rates there.
Volcanic Caves
"A group of those fucking obsidian spear armed lizards attacked us whilst we were exploring the cave. Sergeant Halvar got sliced in half even with that iron plate armor he was wearing, alongside a couple more of us. Poor Gerus was pushed by one of them into a lava pit and the last i saw of him was falling down headfirst into that pit of liquid fire We chased those bastards down to what was apparently their lair and fought them till they escaped. After the battle was over, I told the remaining men to pick up the spears and whatever equipment those lizards had dropped and carry the dead back to base. If there is one lesson i learnt from today's encounter, its not to go into a volcanic cave at any cost. We were lucky that some dragon hadn"t made it its lair. Captain Erik Johansson, writing in his journal about an encounter he and his company had with a group of fire draconiansOften located at the bottom of the volcanoes, volcanic caves serve as entraces to the mighty volcanoes of the island. Travelling through these caves often make soldiers feel claustrophobic due to their narrowness. A rather intriguing thing about these caves is that almost all of them have strange drawings and carvings on their walls. The drawings fit a pattern, and apparently tell the story of an evil being who was banished into this island by a great hero eons ago. Naturally, this has caught the interest of many historians and over time, Ignion island has not only been full of scholars well versed in the natural sciences but has also been filled with historians and other scientists not following natural science subjects who want to learn about the history of this island and whatever secrets it contains. Their pressure for exploring the caves as quickly as possible has rather irritated the soldiers who are stationed on the island however, who want to consolidate their foothold on the island first before doing what the historians wanted them to do. They justify their reason by stating that fire saurians usually have their lairs in the caves, and that the caves are filled with deadly creatures like volcano dragons, lava serpents etc. Despite this, the soldiers are also somewhat eager to explore the caves and decipher the mysterious drawings in the caves.. This has led to some of the soldiers constantly joking that instead of dying honourably in combat, they will die looking at ancient cave drawings whilst lizardmen impale them on obsidian spears.
Lava Rivers and lakes
"Commander, how do we even cross this river? Its made of liquid fire after all." "Tell those engineering boys to build a bridge with the best materials the Imperium has!" "No need sir! I will dive headfirst into this river and cross it with my eyes closed!" "Well do it then. I would love to see you burn your balls in an instant. "Okay, i lose. Perhaps it wasn"t a good idea after all. "Lets go back to the base boys. We will either send the scouts to find a way around or go with the crazy idea of building a bridge on the magma river." An exchange of conversation between Company commander Yelvaran and his soldiers after they encountered a 'river' of flowing magma."Across the desolate landscape of the islands, large rivers of magma can be found, which often lead to large magma lakes. These rivers prove a difficult obstacle for the humans, who often have to take longer routes or are unable to cross the river at all due to lack of a sufficient natural bridge. Even whilst crossing a magma river, one needs to be wary as many deadly creatures lurk beneath the surface of the magma and often ambush unwary humans. The rivers often lead to gigantic lava lakes, which has been known to be the home of gigantic lava serpents. Around these lakes are red crystalline growths, which seem to be related to fire and magma. The imperial scientists on the island have been doing experiments to assess the feasibility of using these crystals to apply fire enchantments on the weapons and armor of the soldiers so as to give them a combat advantage against their enemies on the island.
Fauna & Flora
"The biggest enemy of ours in this island besides mother nature aren"t the dragons or any other gigantic beasts. Its those damned lizards with obsidian spears that don"t stop coming and terrorizing us all the time" Lord Commander Ignius Loramsson, talking about the threat posed by the fire sauriansDespite the many large creatures such as dragons, magma serpents, ignioncrawlers and many other large creatures, the single biggest enemy of the humans on the island other than the weather and lack of supplies are the fire draconians. Wielding weapons made of obsidian and being potent fire magic users, the fire saurians often attack the humans on the islands in large numbers alongside their tamed warbeasts. This is one of the main reasons why there are a large number of full time soldiers on the island, guarding the mining and scientific operations of the imperium.
Natural Resources
"Truth be told, i can"t live anywhere else that would be as good as this island for a workplace. I get paid high salaries, and i am treated well by my employers. I might one day make a private mining company of mine to become rich and hopefully, ensure that no one has to live on bread and dirt in my town ever again" A mining worker, talking about life on the islandIgnion island is rich with mineral resources and heavy materials, many of them being rare ones that can be found only in limited numbers in the rest of the imperium. Ignionite metals also tend to be of much higher quality than anywhere else on the imperium, baring Inaria and a select few other regions. The discovery of large amounts of heavy materials on this island was in part what attracted the attention of the imperium so much. Some areas of the island are already heavily industrialized, with large mines and preliminary processing factories producing and doing the first stages of processing before the material is sent to the mainland.
Life in the Island for a soldier
For soldiers, life in Ignion island is nothing short of nightmarish. Besides having to contend with the horrifying weather and geography, they have to bear the brunt of fire saurian attacks and providing protection for the miners and scientists . To erase a bit of their burden, the soldiers train the civilians in the island whenever they can. This has tremendously reduced the amount of deaths overall and lifted a heavy burden from the military as the civilians can at least defend themselves now. A usual day of a soldier consists of waking up early and reporting for a roll call by their company commander. They then have their breakfast before starting their duties for the day. It can be either patrolling, providing protection for scientists or miners or scouting the island to get a better knowledge of its geography and also hunting beasts for food. They usually do their activities all throughout the day with small breaks till their duty ends at sunset. After that, they join their friends for a bonfire meal before the night shift soldiers take their place and they retire to sleep. Night shift soldiers have little purpose besides guarding the settlements of their respective nations but sometimes, they also take part in some recreational activities if they have the time.Life in Ignion Island for a miner
Despite the harsh working conditions on the island, miners often apply for jobs at ignion island due to the fact that the jobs on this island pay much higher than anywhere else. Non combat related deaths are very rare, owing to strict rules and regulations. The mining industry on the island has also been widely lauded for creating jobs and reducing unemployment even further than it already was in the imperium.Remove these ads. This place sounds pretty badass. I like the opening quote a lot! It's well written. I have a few of my usual comments -- I think it'd be a good idea to cut up some of this info, and start filling the side bar out more. Try and even out the article, and give the reader some "eye breaks" with columns and whatnot. And a couple spelling mistakes here and there you might wanna look at. So reading through, I get that Ignition Island is resource dense -- but is it really THAT rich? Surely there's other places across Elladia that might have less resources, but be far safer to mine? I just wonder if theres other reasons that might drive humanity to stay so close to this giant volcano other than "resources" or "training." Research I get! We do that in real life around volcanos already. Are there any other big-ass volcanos that Ignition island can be compared against? I like the flora and fauna section, it's interesting to have the fire draconians. I think it'd be really neat to expand upon the human v draconian interactions -- the historical cave drawings are really cool too. Seems like a cool location! Well done on it BC.
