Rahnie - Drift

Rahnie: Central Community. Main hub of life and commerce in the area. Blood of Umalo, provides transport and runs between all four Waypoints, while actively coming up with solutions to various problems across the region.

Government

The Nharau are responsible for running the Waypoint. They stick closest to the rules established by the founder. Aside from the basic rules, some of the Territorial Law is as follows:
  • Stealing only matters if you get caught.
  • If you get caught, response is in the hands of the catcher.
  • Don’t kill without good reason.
  • First offence with apology or repentance is not a good enough reason to kill.
  • Rules and Response are met with reasonable discussion and majority vote.
  • In the case of majority vote being a stupid-ass vote, the oldest chosen representative of Nhaeumeki, the youngest chosen representative of Padu, and a chosen representative of the Clan/the ones that have a problem meet and are to come to terms. They have authority to overrule majority vote, to enact new laws, enforce old ones, etc. However, the three must come to a consensus. If absolutely no consensus can be reached, the whole issue is thrown out and the rules revert back to what the previous ruling was. The Clan can then choose to start the issue up again, or take it down to a brawl. Last one standing makes the call, let the storm be on their head. No reversals, no refutes, no standing matters. Dissenters may be killed on sight or kicked out, if required.

Defences

Primary defense is detatchment and speed; each Skimmer is built to sustain the weight of itself and at least two or three around it, and almost every section of Skimmers have at least one mast to a collection of three (one masted Skimmer can carry two unmasted Skimmers), which means a large section can be equally as fast as a single Skimmer due to sails present. Likewise, there are sectioned breaks in which nothing was built in case the Waypoint needs to break in an emergency. The Waypoint splits at these breaking points and each can scatter as needed.   Nharau residences are purposely scattered across the Waypoint as well, with specific intention for those that are more skilled in water magics, mist and fog magics, air magics, and pure fighting techniques. The sections that are primed for fighting threats are built with a combination of skilled fighters and air magics, the sections that are primed for evacuation and retreat have a mix of air and water magics, and the sections that act as a buffer for either fighting or running are a mix of mist and fog magics.

Industry & Trade

Primary Occupation: Trader(Peddler)
  • Wanderers that go from place to place on their own instead of with a caravan. Sometimes found in small groups. Tend to sell an assortment of items they’ve picked up over the travels, and don’t believe in fixed prices. Sell gadgets and gizmos a-plenty.
Other Occupations: Maker, Farmer
  • Maker:Inventor: Tend to enjoy mixing concoctions and unusual ingredients to make something new. Less focused on what they are creating, more focused on simple creation. They don’t really sell a whole lot themselves, but likely have someone that comes by and brings ideas out into the world.
  • Farmers:Scavenger: Willing to scrounge around in old abandoned cities, find spots where some event has happened and left things behind, or loot carcasses (animal or otherwise). Usually will then sell said components to travelers or traveling traders. Many will sell components and finds out of their residence (or can be persuaded to sell).
Primary Currency: Minerals, Raw materials
  • Secondary currency: Favors
Primary Trade: Transportation
  • Secondary Trade: New Inventions

History

Believed to be the first settlement of the Umatoe. The stories of the race against the Atmu have been passed down from here, and many have the actual path of the race burned into their bloodline. Upon returning, it was said Nhuameki staked her claim of living on the edge of the land, where she felt most at home, the other Umatoe following her and setting up camp as well. They gathered together the wreckage of all their Skimmers and pieced them together to create a dwelling that floated upon the water, and thus Rahnie was born.   Stories: Nheukrioh; story of Nhaeumeki and the race against the Atmu(drift) The Path to Iohnirahu/Keep of the Atmu(Sanumhor) Ghost of the mountains(Hollow Mine) Hidden Hoard(Waterways, hidden underground tunnels) Path of Padu(Bloodmine)

Points of interest

Rahnie: Central Community. Main hub of life and commerce in the area. Blood of Umalo, provides transport and runs between all four Waypoints, while actively coming up with solutions to various problems across the region. Sanumhor: Landmark, minable materials. Primary source of Litabrenin, a hot orange mineral. Kraionira: Secondary Community. Offers food and small amounts of mined material. At the Edge of Iohnirahu, treated as the last barrier --Internally, between Reality and Nightmare. Externally, between Rahnie’s boundary and the wild mountains. Serves as a rest-and-refuel spot for explorers, with attached mythology that Nhaemuki used an unknown mountain pass to trick the cheaters, the Atmu. Kraloitre: Tertiary Community. Mine. Small community near the base of the mountain with the primary goal to mine Loitre, a mineral that looks like frozen blood. Houses forgers and a few explorers, good spot for those looking for a job, as the community isn’t too picky about who mines. So long as you aren’t dangerous or stingy about it. Boliloi: Landmark, River. Usable/minable materials. Primary source of Liteli, Lotlitupai, Stuenlo, and Loumbosta. Also used for for games, hunting, fishing, and diving.

Tourism

Things to Do:
  • Join a Race
  • Mine materials
  • Join a Hunting Party
  • Run Trade Routes
  • Invent Something
  • Steal Something
  • Explore Frozen Tunnels
  Things to See:
  • Mists at the edge of Boliloi
  • Sanumhor’s Edge
  • ‘Hover-Water’ in the mountains by Kraloitre
  Games:
  • Steal The Win - A game like capture the flag and Poker, where a group of two or three go up against an opposing group of two or three, each one presents goods in the form of physical or favor, makes a bet on how long it’ll take the other to succeed at the task, then hides the loot alongside a Resonant Stone linked to the other party. First one to find the loot and claim victory wins both piles. Bonus points if you can convincingly cheat or bluff your opponents without the use of violence.
  • Diver: Two or more drop small bits of sinking material into the water and give it until the count of five before diving. Grab your own material and make it back to the surface before your opponent and you win. Bonus points if you grab your opponents material before they do, keep it away from them, and breach the surface first.
  • Keep Away: Soccer, but with return points, betting and boats: Teammates pile onto at least two boats, opponents do the same. Item to be kept away from the opponent is determined (often some sort of animal or ball of Litabrenin), goal points are established, and some form of wager is had. The goal is to race to the goal point while tossing the item back and forth between you, not allowing the item to rest for long (or risk penalty to your Skimmer through attack or damage). Keep the item in your control, reach the goal point, and return to the starting point and you win a point. The goal of the opposing team is to steal the item and get a point for their team. At the end of the agreed-upon limit, whoever has the most points wins. Extra points are won for the Skimmer that reaches the goal point and/or reaches the starting point, while both Skimmers in a team get points for successful ‘Rounding’. Aside from actions that result in immediate death, everything goes. Bonus points for stealth and distraction. If one of your Skimmers is damaged beyond sailing, your team is immediately disqualified. If there are only two teams, it’s an automatic win (although with little honor attached unless the damage was done in a stealthy way). If there are more than two teams, the team taking out another team’s Skimmer wins a point (with the same caveat applied). If the item is knocked into the water, whoever retrieves it is the new owner, and taking it around the goal is not necessary to make a point.
Music:
  • Drum: leather stretched over a stone bowl and beaten (stone can have added holes for different vibes, things inside the drum, and will be various sizes and widths for different sounds).
  • Rattlers: Hollow bones with small items inside to make hand-rattlers. Drum can be applied, as can various accoutrements for different sounds.
  • Chimes: Various stones, rock, and bone have been used to make hanging chimes. These are used as alert systems, music, hanging windchimes, door chimes, and musical chimes.

Architecture

For Rahnie and its territories, the buildings and structures never went further than two levels, and as the communities grew, the Waypoint centers grew out instead of up, the general idea continuing to be one of sudden disbanding as a necessary need. Each section was roughly the size of one to five connected Skimmers before a hinge/unlocking joint was placed, for the express purpose to give Rahnie the ability to disband immediately in the case of sudden or severe storms. This carried over into Kraionira and Kraloitre, where the structures spread out more than up; in both cases they began to build the community inside caves to keep safe during severe weather. They built tunnels as they needed to expand, going out into the mountain instead of up. A small gathering of Skimmers rests at the edge of each mine that acts as the ‘public face’ of each, the place where shipping and transport happens, trade and commerce, travelers visit, etc. It is kept with tradition, growing out along the coast as needed with only up to five Skimmers per section, but as the Skimmers were attached to land more than the waters, the sections were not as seriously needed. Eventually each mine built walkways into the water, allowing other Skimmers to stop and rest on the outskirts of the community if they so wanted. The water-walkways are always on the outside like spokes of a wheel, and eventually the same practice was adopted into Rahnie proper.

Geography

Wide flat waters, with mountain ranges to both sides, a series of rivers in broken bits of ice to the south and rampant storms to the north.
