The Varil House
The Varil house is an apartment in Koren, a small port town on the west coast Syndal. It is part of a block of five others, connected by a small corridor.
Design
The apartment has two rooms - a living room/kitchen and sleeping quarters. It has a single floor and is made out of stone, with a flat slate roof - angled roofs not necessary in Syndal due to lack of any significant degree of precipitation. It measures roughly five by seven metres, with a low roof.
Entries
There is a single door into the apartment, a sturdy wooden door on iron hinges. There are two small shuttered windows, one in the living room and one in the bedroom.
Denizens
The apartment belongs to Syndalan man-at-arms Eko of Varil. It houses him and his family, which consists of his wife, two children, and his mother, all of the Varil Clan.
Contents & Furnishings
The living room has a fire pit in the center, with a bench next to it and another in the far corner. Several cabinets sit against the walls. In the bedroom, there are two beds next to each other, and blankets on the floor for his children.
Architecture
The Varil House closely follows the generic style of Syndalan buildings - dark stone walls, flat roofs, largely undecorated.
History
The apartment was built in 1564, as part of an apartment block made in a push to increase living room in the city. It is currently on its second owner, the first being a semi-skilled blacksmith who died of tuberculosis in 1579. It was quickly taken up by the soldier Eko of Varil, who sought his own residence (as opposed to a cramped barrack) after being stationed at Koren earlier that year.
