Oberon Rank/Title in Eldris | World Anvil

Oberon (Oh-Bur-On)

The Title "Oberon", or "The Oberon" is one granted to very few notable individuals. It is commonly synonymously associated with the title "King" or "Emperor". It is a title denoting leadership of the Fae court. Like Titania and Orin, the title is gender neutral. Unlike the title of Titania and Orin, it cannot be inherited, only earned. Each Titania choses his or her Oberon, idealy for their capacity as a leader and a warrior.

Qualifications

Once, Oberon was merely selected by Titania and granted by the office of Titania. Now, Oberon is typically a result of marriage to The Titania. Qualifications go beyond the union or selection though, as the nature of the office necessitates that The Oberon be a competent warrior and tactical leader, as well as versed in politics.

Requirements

The Oberon must be of marrying age, an accomplished soldier, display tactical capability, display political competence, and meet the approval of the people.

Appointment

The Titania appoints his or her Oberon when they take office. Many times, when they still carry the title of Orin, they will have already selected their Oberon and sworn oaths with their true names to their intended Oberon. This often overrides objections from the current Oberon as well as the people.

Duties

The Oberon's duty is to protect the realm at all times. During times of war, it is Oberon's duty to bring the war to an end as quick and favorably as possible.

Responsibilities

The Oberon's responsibilities during times of peace are to maintain training of the warriors, appointment of military offices, and maintaining the defense of the realm. During times of war, the Titania steps back and the Oberon takes charge, leading the political front as well as the military front. A wartime Oberon is in charge of troop deployment, securing resources and routes, employing battle tactics, and bringing a quick resolution to war through negotiation if possible. When the war comes to an end, the Oberon is in charge of troop withdrawal and declaring peace, handing leadership back to the Titania.

Grounds for Removal/Dismissal

Should an Oberon fail to relinquish control back to their Titania or fail to adequately defend the realm, they may be deposed by the voice of the people. The Titania is required by the laws and bindings of the station to follow the will of the people. Due to the nature of the title, this does not necessitate a divorce from the individual. Appointment of a new Oberon is often debated following the deposal of an Oberon.
