Jonathan Reetmayer Character in Ekozia | World Anvil

Jonathan Reetmayer

I could never imagine anything other than exploring the depths of the earth itself. Why should I try to brave the dangerous see? Why should I wander far into hostile nations, when there is a full world left to explore right beneath our feet? And what kind of citizen of Caramiza would I be, if I would not follow the paths of Maned hismself? I will never feel more at home than in the depths of a cave.

Jonathan Reetmayer is an explorer and cavern cartograph of Caramiza, most known for his discoveries of th eUkanten Ruined City in the Ukanten Mountains and the Crystal Caverns in the Terkanten Mountains beneath the settlement of Gamiantown Sabesbank. His current location is unknown and he is presumed dead.
Reetmayer was often hired by various mining industries, such as Whitesteel Inc for prospecting endeavors in the mountain ranges. Due to the growing industry and subsequent need for new materials, he was traveling with a core group around the country. In a letter to a friend, he once described this as his "best-financed adventures in spelunking" he could have ever dreamt of.
While the discovery of the Ukanten Ruined City in 1692 was almost coincidental, Reetmayer claimed that he was specifically interested in prospecting in that area due to old texts a friend of him had discovered a few years ago. As a result of the spectacular discovery, he gained a lot of fame as an explorer, and ging forward, Reetmayer was able to launch multiple expeditions towards areas of his specific interest. While at first there were no further spectacular discoveries, the excellent cartography of several cave systems has garnered solid interest in scholastic circles and was used as a basis for planning further prospecting endeavors.
In 1698 Reetmayer uncovered an entrance to a larger cave system, the Crystal Caverns of the Sabesbank Quarry. This is his last known discovery, as he and his people did not yet return from exploring and mapping the cave system. A few maps from his first trip down the caves indicate a larger system of tunnels and subterranean rivers as was first expected. Some notes on these maps hint towards their next expedition following one of the larger streams deeper into the caverns.

I really love the quote from him at the beginning - that basically sums him up as a character and it's perfect. I wonder what became of him.
