Irontipped Bonequill

The Irontipped Bonequell are a writing Utensil, found in large numberswithin the ruins of Ukanten Ruined City. They were apparently used to etch the Ancient Shortrunes and othe rdepictions into metal plates or hard rock.

Components

The quill is fashioned out of at least two components: A bone and a metal tip.   The bones are the fingers of a proportionally short and stubby hand of a humanoid creature. As the name suggests, the tip of the bones are of an unspecified iron alloy with magical crystals enclosed, As the bones are relatively short, t is likely the quills were used with a handle made of a material that has long since decayed. The bones itself are sometimes decorated by intricate etchings, with runes seemingly describing the name of possibly the owner.   The tip is enchanted and with it the quill is able to etch even into hard metal alloys like steel. When doing so, it leaves behind golden-red streaks in the metal, making even shallow etches perfectly readable.

Manufacturing process

The general manufacturing process of these quills seems to be straightforward: Metal is heated to a melting point and the bones are dipped into it for a short time.   after cooling of the drippe dmetal tip will apparently be cut and sanded to form a suitable tip. Multiple formvariants can be found throughout the ruins.   Within the ruins are depictions of the creation process. Some of these depictions suggest, that the bones were still attached to a person, when dipped into the metal. Current theories suggest this to be some form of extreme punishment.

Further Details

Some etchings in the Ukanten Ruins show different line colors than rd or gold - suggesting there are multiple ways to enchant the tips that have not yet been found.
A set of five quills with a golden tip have been found in a shrine to Maned. These pens are not able to etch metal, however and their function is unclear.
