GHG Session 39: A Curious Challenger

General Summary

Month 1, Week 1, Year 919
As the party prepared for a long rest after its encounter with the corpse flower, Windred and Ysmyrelda took a moment to check on Frogina's mental health. The bullywug still seemed a little shaken by Zan'kiri's stern lecture, coming to the slow realization that the adventuring life isn't always a field trip with your favorite teacher. But Windred and Ys gave her some reassuring advice, explaining how if she helped out the party when things got hairy they'd make sure to help her out too.    During watch that night Reetma asked Zan'kiri about his enslavement to the Horn of Valhalla, a conversation that turned into a debate over divinity and the gods in everyday life. Zan'kiri argued that the Ageless One was an oppressor who kept him and his people stuck on Ekal, a statement which perplexed Reetma and everything he'd grown up hearing about the deity's laissez-faire approach to religious leadership. Reetma pointed out some contradictions in Zan'kiri's worldview and argued that Eldath was a deity worth serving, but the gith insisted that the gods would never help someone without expecting something in return.    Later that night Windred tried meditating with her quori spirit Cheyeashtai, only to be once more interrupted by Craghan's arcane meddling. The spell that Craghan used was getting more and more powerful, warning that the more often Windred relied on the quori's powers the stronger his spell would get. For now the spell suppressed/disabled Windred's connection to Cheyeashtai for ten minutes, but its duration could easily increase over time...   On Thursday the party headed east towards Ownka Ramm's lizardfolk camp, forced to pass through an origami forest on the way where even the fish swimming in the ponds were magical paper constructs. The kenku revenant that first gave the party a violent welcome to the Koulan Forests appeared once more, confused by why the Fortunate Five plunged deeper into the forests despite the daily threats of violence conjured by the forest. This entity started to show its age during the conversation, brushing aside human goals like glory and money as meaningless pursuits that would vanish over time. This entity did seem to understand the party's desire for a challenge, summoning a horde of origami monsters for them to fight in the paper forest.    The battle brought the party to the brink of its abilities, Beguiler's mysterious absence complicating their calculations. Reetma and Zan'kiri managed to keep the largest monsters from advancing too quickly, Xa'kara stabbing at paper rabbits while Bubbles played interference from the side of the cart. Windred's healing powers went into overdrive patching up fallen allies, by this point the forest churning with a storm of sharp petals that pierced through anybody not wearing Zan'kiri's artisanal armor. But the battle slowly turned in the FF's favor after key moments like when Frogina decided to help out the group over Zan'kiri, and with the defeat of the two largest monsters victor was all but certain. The kenku revenant, impressed by the group's exploits, appeared to speak on the forest's behalf and promised them safe passage for the following day on their journey to Ownka's camp. It was around this time that Beguiler finally returned, holding a papier mache cosmic apple.
