GHG Session 30: Fortune Doesn't Go Past Five

General Summary

Month 13, Week 2, Year 918
The Fortunate Five, after venturing into the ruins of an Old Myltevian dungeon, found themselves face-to-face with an undead spirit haunting the tunnels. The creature was quickly dispatched with after Windred summoned the beastlike form of Cheyeashtai, but this spirit proved to be the herald of a series of unfortunate events.   The party found a tunnel with large stone doors on either end, with murals of chained angels etched into the rocks. Zan'kiri investigated the opposite side of the doorway with a handy use of the 'Clairvoyance' spell, discovering a chamber full of stone angels and a library full of ruined books. He also recognized that having the entire party go inside one of these rooms would lead to several terrible deaths, so he had a couple of his porcine skeletons collect the items from the room. When an enchanted skull was plucked from the hands of an angel in the back, the walls of the dungeon started rumbling and Beguiler could see off in the distance that the fancy ancient doors in the atrium were now open.   A purple tiefling stood in the center of a stained-glass magic circle, chains linked through his horns and purple gems carved onto his fingertips. As Ysmyrelda had learned the hard way, this was the archmage Monomakh the Foreseer. He gave the party just enough rope to hang themselves with, letting them rummage through his belongings before demanding some kind of trade for their departure. Beguiler tearfully surrendered a cosmic apple to sweeten the deal, along with the first person to race into the atrium. Despite Ys' best efforts, Reetma was the one who got there first and promptly vanished into the chambers beneath the stained-glass circle.   Beguiler disappeared while the rest of the party debated how best to deal with this archmage, especially since it looked like the entrace had been sealed off by fallen rocks. Reetma suddenly tumbled out of an illusory portion of the atrium wall, having punched through a glass jar in the chambers below. The FF raced downstairs to investigate, discovering a giant laboratory surrounding the magic circle where Monomakh stood. He proved to be an intimidating foe for the party, the archmage bragging about his binding of multiple celestials to do his bidding. It was a painful bargain, but the party offered up a lot to Monomakh for their escape: Beguiler's cosmic apple, Zan'kiri's spellbook, Ys' hand for some cused bedazzling, and Reetma for the tiefling's 'experiments'. Reetma cursed the party as they scrambled out of the dungeon, but for the group it was a way to fight another day. There was no way for them to fight in their condition (especially with all the rest Bubbles needed), so as the FF reunited with Chusei University guards they started to plan a rescue operation...
