EooD Session 5: Sardivelian Coin Tosses

General Summary

10/2/900 After a night's long rest at The Laughing Gnoll tavern, the party prepared for along journey north to confront the pack of well-dressed gnolls that had killed so many members of Rakka's Heroes. Decarabia the tavern owner warned the group against such a dangerous mission since it led to the death of one of her favorite customers Shad Stixs, but the party was adamant about obtaining receiving 400GP each for clearing out the pack.   The travel there was uneventful, the party surviving on daily rations without Mickal Irakosk's 'Goodberry' to feed them every night. Along the way the party noticed several dozen aurochs grazing in a valley off the side of the trail, and when Damon went down to investigate he was nearly swooped up by a gargantuan roc passing by to snatch half a dozen aurochs from the herd. The rest of the party had zero sympathy for his near-death experience.   10/3/900 After days of traveling, the party finally returned to the scene of one of Rakka's Heroes most humiliating defeats. Cig and Kipp discussed different traps they could lay to lure out the well-dressed gnolls, but before the party could agree to a plan Zherxik walked up into the middle of the gnolls and challenged the pack leader to a game of Sardivelian Coin Toss. A game of life and death, players would pass around a pistol with one bullet inside until the gun discharged into someone's head. The last person standing won the game, the loser laying dead at their feet from multiple gunshot wounds.   Zherxik bet that he could outlast a gnoll in a game of firearms, but the pack leader proved to have a stronger constitution than than the tiefling gunslinger. Despite several point-blank shots to the head, the pack stayed in the game while Zherxik passed out after several gunshot blasts. The pack leader slashed the tiefling to pieces, ending the game with Zherxik's death. In the meantime, Kirby moved closer to one of the plateaus near the center of camp to charm one of the gnoll sentries into attacking the pack leader.   A massive encounter ensued, leaving both Cig and Kipp near death as gnolls surrounded them on all sides. Cedar cast a massive wave of 'Spike Growth' in the middle of the gnoll advancement, injuring several of them and forcing others to take longer routes towards the party. Kirby made the pack leader mad with fear while the charmed gnoll fired off shots at its former allies, setting Kipp up for a well-placed 'Ray of Frost' that literally froze the pack leader dead in his tracks. Damon rushed forward to fight several gnolls with his echo fighter, distracting the monsters from a direct confrontation with the rest of the party. Cig and Kipp both cast 'Armor of Agathys', making sure every gnoll who hit them paid dearly for it in the form of devastating amounts of cold damage. After a hard-fought battle stretching across the valley, the last gnoll standing was an archer atop a plateau facing Rakka's Heroes. Lighting a cigar before firing his final arrow, he was killed by one of Kipp's javelins and fell 30 ft into the valley below. The party, stronger and better prepared, had managed to defeat this mysterious pack of well-dressed gnolls.   Once the party gave Zherxik a proper burial and tossed the gnoll bodies onto a bonfire, the group rested a few hours away and awoke to a tortle watching them from the edge of camp. Cig, immediately suspicious, woke everybody else in the party to warn them of the stranger. The tortle explained that he was Zilocke from Rakka's Heroes reserve forces, and a quick call to Director Astara confirmed this to be true. Still suspicious of the newcomer, the party allowed Zilocke to travel with them back to Qilthani.   10/4/900 From the moment the party entered Qilthani they were treated like heroes for the way they valiantly defeated the pack of gnolls terrorizing the city. They dropped off the pack leader's head at Mayor Proserpine's office in city hall, collecting the 400GP each for a job well done. The party discussed maybe checking on Hedera and her devilish conspiracy, but Proserpine offered them a more tantalizing prize: 1,000GP each for defeating some undead monsters terrorizing the ships passing through Qilthani's waters. The party quickly agreed to the mission and its end-of-the-year deadline.   For the rest of the day the party went on a shopping spree with its newfound wealth. Kirby bought some reed pipes that could cast 'Barkskin' from an elven woman, and he even got a date out of the haggling. Zilocke visited with a bullywug merchant at Warehouse 8, and he obtained a sahuagin priestess' staff that still held some magic powers inside the shells attached to it. Damon went to a nearby blacksmith to purchase some splint armor, silently pondering what kind of future deals he could strike with the devil he sold his soul to.   The next morning before the party began searching for a way to hunt down these undead monsters, Zilocke visited Mayor Proserpine to ask if he could add an amendment to his monster-hunting contract. Instead of the 1,000GP, Zilocke explained, he'd be willing to take less reward money in return for a magic item that would improve his sturdiness in combat.
