EooD Session 35: Guess Who's Coming to Dinner

General Summary

Month 1, Week 3, Year 901
Day 9 in the Underdark
After a late breakfast the party split up to different parts of the city to prepare for an inevitable confrontation with House Baudissin. Q visited the local temple of The Ageless One, spending a hefty amount of gold to inform Father Eli Anderson about the Dark Souls' progress. The tiefling preacher agreed to the Rakka-Verschow negotiations being held in a week's time, something that would no doubt turn into a whole-day affair.   Meanwhile Poolp did some shopping for the party with Marwen's generous stipend. He found close to a dozen healing potions and some magic bracers for Verity, a decent haul to protect against the Baudissin's conspiracies. Verity followed Allexander and Saskia Hainaut as they made social calls for tomorrow night's gala, enduring a run-in with the poisoner of breadsticks herself Ereldra Baudissin. Allexander sensed more tension than usual coming from Verity, but the ranger wasn't ready to discuss her suspicions about Allexander's betrayal.   The rest of the party stayed behind at Castle Hainaut, Nineveh and the others planning their conspiracy against the Baudissins. At one point Lachesis called up Applonia, the dark elf who half-remembered seeing a fiend outside of Dromire, to Marwen's room. Casting 'Remove Curse' on Applonia, they got a clearer picture of the other people at the meeting: Thoman, a Baudissin and Ereldra's cousin; Gremory, the succubus in Naberius' service; and Allexander Hainaut. Lachesis showed a picture of Allexander, and once Applonia confirmed it was the same bright-eyed dark elf from the meeting she was allowed to leave while Lachesis turned towards the four-poster bed where Marwen layed hidden during the entire interrogation.   The two sisters got into a bitter fight about how to punish Naberius' conspirators, Lachesis finding fault with Marwen's take-no-prisoners approach. Marwen was fully prepared to have her son executed if he didn't repent of his fiendish dealings, and she would do the same to all the Baudissins who had sold their souls away. Lachesis, frustrated by her sister's self-righteousness, blamed her sister for Allexander's corruption by abandoning the family for half a century. Marwen maintained that she needed the time and distance to purify herself of the Verschow's inherent evils, giving her the ability to return as a savior to its people and save them from total annihilation. This fight could be heard outside in the hallway by a very awkward Verity, who had just returned from her outing with Saskia and Allexander.   Lachesis stormed out of Marwen's room, running into Verity and sharing with her some of the day's developments. The elven wizard confessed to a dream where Naberius tempted her with everything she desired, hence her exhausted state for most of the day. Verity showed sympathy to her old ally, making their way downstairs to prepare for an evening dinner.   While Poolp carried Marwen downstairs, plans were set in motion for tomorrow night's gala. Saskia ensured that all the major houses would be represented at the party, with the key exception of the Baudissins. Marwen made it clear that the Hainauts and Dark Souls would only resort to violence if the Baudissins initiated the conflict, allowing everybody to make the necessary preparations. The House matriarch also made a warning to anybody who had conspired with Naberius, saying that repentance would be the only way to avoid to avoid certain death.   A nervous Allexander rose up from the dinner table, admitting how he'd met with the Baudissins and Naberius last year to help them create some undead monsters to terrorize the Rakkan frontier. These dybbuks would be made from the souls of tieflings stolen from the countryside, sent back to the settlements to cause even more chaos and destruction. Marwen slowly stood up and embraced Allexander while he wept, ordering Verity to have him thrown in the dungeons a few minutes later.   As the party tried to move on with their night's dinner, a new disturbance caught everybody off-guard as a small dot of light appeared above the dinner table. Poolp tried to contain it with a cloache, but the light grew and expanded until it burst with a wave of radiant energy. Those closest to the energy experienced minor burns, but these injuries became a second thought as they processed what was hovering above them: the ghost of Jael Hainaut.
