EooD Session 12: Our Guards Are Better Than Yours

General Summary

12/4/900
Leaving the ruins and bitter memories of Pelaios Ranch behind them, Rakka's Heroes continued their journey west towards the industrial powerhouse of Rel-Kadrar. Halfway through their frontier trek the party rested for a week at Fort Reverence, a Rakkan military outpost guarding over The Verschow territory and any drow activity in Rakka's wilderness. Director Astara advised that they could get their weapons strengthened by one of the fort's blacksmiths and announced that a new party member would be joining them there.    After a quick meeting with Cpt. Nicor the party headed down to the mess hall to meet Seraphina Cedarroost, a halfling rogue from the Treeleaf Union and the latest addition to Rakka's Heroes. She made a good first impression on the party, and Cedar took the halfling's last name as a good omen.    Later that day the group met with Sal, an old and grizzled bugbear blacksmith who specialized in the art of silvered weapons. After Cig name-dropped Director Astara she agreed to magically silver the group's weapons at a discounted fee, just 200GP per weapon with all of them ready by the end of the week. Cig's rapier, Lilith's two dragonborn scimitars, and Seraphina's Sardivelian-style rapier all got the silvered treatment for any fiendish encounters the party may face in the future.    Seraphina gambled with the other party members in the party's downtime, and Cig spent the week poring over maps of the Rakkan frontier in the fort's small library. An aarakocran guard named Koel Weathervane helped Cig interpret some of the more complicated maps, giving the small paladin a crash course on Rakkan politics and what to expect in Rel-Avery. Although a predominantly tiefling nation, Rakka's military council always reserved special positions for the kingdom's aarakocra and goblinoid populations. The council's aarakocra representative had recently passed away from old age (he was 32), and the race to choose his successor was between an establishment pick and a hard-liner who was pushing for war with the The Verschow. Centuries of fighting between the drow and tieflings had soured both sides on reconciliation, making any kind of power-sharing deal near impossible to complete.    Later in the week Giga confronted Cig in an empty room, tearing off the paladin's helmet and revealing his goblin form for the first time to any party member. Despite the tension in the party, Rakka's Heroes retrieved their silvered weapons and recruited three guards (including Weathervane) to escort them on the two-week's ride to Rel-Avery. Right from the start Kirby started flirting with Hecat, a red tiefling and the lone female from the guard entourage.    13/2/900
The party traveled through the Rakkan frontier for another couple weeks, waking up each night to a light dusting of frost and snow on the landscape. Only a few day's journey from Verschow territory, the party saw canyons and plateaus scarred by decades of warfare. Cedar cast 'Druidcraft' on every dying tree or shrub she passed by, unsure if they'd survive in the bitter wilderness.   With just a few more days before arrival in Rel-Avery, the party was stopped by three guards on horseback racing towards the wagon. The guards, dressed in thick plate armor with iron masks hiding their faces, said they had come to escort the party to Rel-Kadrar and that the other guards could return to Fort Reverence. Seraphina hid behind a rock, Lilith drew her scimitars, and Cedar transformed into a small black bear as a mood of distrust fell over the party. Sensing something off about the guards with how they kept repeating the same phrases, Cig called up Director Astara to ask her about the guards. Astara admitted that she was going to host a party for the adventurers once they arrived in Rel-Kadrar, but she hadn't sent out any guards to escort them. Cig's divine sense warned him that the guards were emanating a fiendish presence, and within seconds a fight broke out on the trail.    The lead guard delivered a fearsome shriek that stunned half the party, and Cedar was nearly killed in just a couple rounds. The party's military escort came to their rescue, rushing into the fray and distracting some of the blows that would've gone towards Rakka's Heroes. Hecat, Kirby's lover and betrothed, died in a fight with one of the guards after being pierced through the heart by a halberd. Giga's elemental spells delivered damage from afar, and together Cig and Lilith managed to deliver the killing blow to the fiendish guards.    Investigating the remains of the guards, the party was shocked when they removed the guard's masks and found nothing but blank faces underneath. No eyes, no mouths, no hair, just purple skin and some viscous substance bleeding through the stab wounds. As Lilith carved out pieces of the guards Cig called Astara to report on the guards. Astara explained that the fiendish guards were wearing armor from the Regulated Steel militia, a private military force created to defend the factories of Rel-Kadrar from unrest. Astara swore that Regulated Steel was an incorruptible institution, but she did little to soothe Cig's fears when she admitted that Regulated Steel guards would be on the train the party planned on taking into Rel-Avery.    Continuing the journey into Rel-Avery, the party couldn't shake the feeling that there was a mole in Rakka's Heroes reporting the party's movements back to Naberius. Some, like Cig, suspected that Astara was the mole.
