Gun Darim
The First Dwarven Colony on Deadmouth Island
Ruins of a dwarven city in the Infernal Jungle. Abandoned some two and a half centuries ago, the jungle has overgrown the ruined buildings, though glimpses of the beautiful dwarven architecture carved into the volcanic rock of which the city is largely constructed is still apparent. Built in a series of concentric rings a mile or so in diameter, the city also goes underground, though more shallow than typical for a dwarven city due to the terrain.
History
Gun Darim was the first attempt to establish a dwarven presence on Deadmouth Island and though it lasted some four decades, the jungle location chosen proved to be difficult to defend and the surrounding subterrain rather more impenetrable than the dwarves had anticipated.
Architecture
The ruined buildings above ground were carved from slabs of basalt and obsidian quarried from the volcanic rock of the area. Rosewood and teak were the chosen woods used in construction of the city's buildings. Intricate runes are carved into the rock of the buildings as well as representations of the wildlife of the area and historical scenes.
Geography
Though it sits close to the edge of the Infernal Jungle, the undergrowth is quite dense and the city hidden until you are almost on top of it. Cresting a ridge, the ruins sit in a bowl of sorts. Whilst the hidden location might have seemed a safeguard against intrusions, it ultimately proved rather difficult to defend from incursions once its general location was known, despite the dense surrounding undergrowth. An underground river briefly breaches the surface, running around the southeast third of the hollow.
Natural Resources
Of course the surrounding tree and plant life and the abundance of animals was an attraction to settling the city as well as access to water from the river that flows nearby. The hills nearby also hold a rich variety of ores and gemstones.
