His reasoning is uncertain. He acquired a champion, Patir Nadaar, claimed demi-plane of Xydriss, The Undying who was slain by his champion.  He took the Dragonborn of Xydriss, The Undying under the protection of his champion and the Order of Time . His Order and Dragonborn have defended M'Erenal during its rebuilding and the recovery of the Sand Elf.
