The Imperial Reply to Lysion De Fleury

This is a reproduction of the text of the Imperial Reply to Lysion De Fleury, also known colloquially as the Fleurian Death Warrant, or simply Fleury's End.   Although the original document was destroyed - probably by the recipient himself - the text had, by then, passed through so many other hands that the accuracy of the contents are well established.
To Lysion, of the House of De Fleury, at Vichonille   Via the Court of the Realm of Aeltice, at Padetta   From The Office of International Diplomacy, in the Ministry of Letters, in Perilon, Jewelled City of the Grand Barsian Empire,    for the Glory of Korek, and all the gods of the Aetheon,   at the will of the Imperial Paiah, Zaraph, of the Dynasty of the House of De Rahza, and the Paiah's Counsel.     Dear Lysion,   Here, in the Jewelled City of Perilon, at the heart of the grand Barsian Empire, we are pleased to hear that those of House De Fleury, who left our shores so long ago, still recall the Empire from which they originated with fondness. You will doubtless be gratified to know that our Empire stand greater than ever, a shining beacon of culture, civilization and scholarly endeavour, which continues to stand strong for generation upon generation.   It is gratifying for the Empire to see the growth of new nations emerging from the bold decrees made by previous Paiah, to proclaim freedom and independence both for the monarchy of Fleurice, established by your ancestor, and for your sibling country Aeltice, through whom this letter shall be delivered. The crafting of suitable proclamations and subsequent treaties of alliance to be agreeable and beneficial to all parties should not be forgotten, nor underestimated.   We were therefore greatly concerned to receive your request for our assistance, particularly at your stated need for our military, rather than diplomatic intervention. That another nation would so boldly seek to invade our ally seemed both shocking and unthinkable. It was a great relief when we received Other Reports which clarified the situation for us, revealing that the threat of violence and destruction upon your House was not in fact a brazen external invasion, but an uprising among the native residents of the land your ancestor chose to claim.   This being the case, consultation with our diplomatic scholars quickly brought to our attention the specific terms of our alliance with Fleurice as an independent nation, to bring military assistance upon your request, to assist in repelling invasion by an external force. As neither your request nor our own sources indicate any evidence of external involvement in your current situation, we therefore confirm that your independent sovereignty will not be endangered or encroached upon by the presence of our military forces.   To conclude, we send our best wishes for health and prosperity to the land in which you dwell, and the people who inhabit it.   Regards   Officials of the Barsian Empire, on behalf of the Imperial Paiah Zaraph De Rahza.

It is noted that the scholars from within the Barsian Empire tend not to provide any commentary upon this document. Therefore the comments included alongside the text have been sourced from the book A History of our National Neighbours by the historical scholar, Maester Koron Deyrick, of the University of Weimern, Eschavarr.

I always wonder whether Lysion knew from the beginning that he was in trouble, or whether he arrogantly skimmed over the formalities of the address, and missed the significance of the lack of title or nation by his own name.   Personally, I am most amused by the latter, and the question which follows - as he scanned the letter for what he wanted to hear, at what point did he realise it was not there?

The Court at Aeltice, which was well known for its love of political intrigue, is not only held up as an example of a nation which is sucessful (though certainly not untroubled)! It is also an indication that the letter and its contents are expected to be conveyed more widely than just to its apparent recipient.   It is likely the Galay Revolutionaries knew before Lysion himself did... and I wonder if they realised that was deliberate?

The conclusion of the letter is such a glorious slap in the face! I wish I could congratulate whoever wrote it, but I love that they choose to remain an entirely anonymous 'official'. In the unlikely event that it really was just some low-level clerk tasked with writing the diplomatic NO, I sincerely hope they were promoted for this!
