Gnags
Liars, Beggars, thieves and looters. We are called many different names by many different people. They treat is with such disdain, yet who is it that keeps their trash from overflowing their streets? Who is that fight tooth and nail to keep goblins, kobolds and other subterranean critters from turning their catacombs to their nesting grounds. We did. The Ratfolk of the Gnagi Islands did. We do not encroach on their lives. We do not threaten their existence. Its a matter of symbiosis. They make money, they create fancy things, they turn their nose up at anything scurrying around their feet. We take that money, we nick that fancy thing and we kill that thing that is biting at their ankles. We need to eat to you know.
Basic Information
Anatomy
The average Gnag is bipedal and hunched forward. Looking much like a rat that learned to walk, their ratlike ears are proportionally smaller then their fourlegged compatriots. Their tales are largely prehensile, meaning they can be used to trip and steal things just as well as any of their other limbs.
Biological Traits
Gnags mature early, at the age of 6 or 7 and live up to 50 years although most die from violent causes or diseases around the age of 35. Males tend to be slightly bigger then the female Gnags but only make out around 35 percent of the Gnag populace.
Dietary Needs and Habits
Gnags can seemingly eat anything, and are not against living off other peoples trash.
Biological Cycle
Maturing quickly, the Gnags do age rather quickly as well. When they get older, they loose isolation and grow thicker fur to compensate.
Additional Information
Geographic Origin and Distribution
Ratfolk or Gnags tend to thrive in the underbelly and sewer system of any mayor city. The only exception to this is Dwarven cities, where much worse things tend to inhabit the bellows and sewers. The largest concentration of Gnags are in Naul-Rahn, especially in Seredas. Gnags can be found everywhere on all continents, although where you see a lot of dwarves, you see less Gnags.
Average Intelligence
Gnags are on the largely, slightly more intelligent then most of the other sentient races. They are just hindered by their lack of impulse control and social graces.
Perception and Sensory Capabilities
Gnags have exellent perception both in light and darkness. Their noses are exceptionally good at picking up distinct smells and odors and their large ears allow them to hear and pinpoint sounds much better then most non beast-folk.
Civilization and Culture
Naming Traditions
Gnags lack any real uniform first or last names. They tend to pick whatever name fits the dominant culture or ethnicity in the area.
Major Organizations
There exist very little in way of organization among the Gnags. At the most, they create loosely connected syndicates within their settlements, who try wrangle control of trade or a big income source. Gnags are much to free to let others tell them what to do. A Gnag female births about 2-3 at time, and averages a birthrate around 14 young over their life of which 5-6 tend to survive. Usually 1 make it out alive,
Courtship Ideals
Ideally, the male courts the female with shiny trinkets and material wealth. The courtship is over quickly if the male is deemed good enough. Among less marerialistic Gnags, the courtship is even shorter, as the biological clock of both genders move at accelerated speed from that of a human or a dwarf.
Relationship Ideals
Gnag relationships are flighty things and the courtship is brief and only lasts as long as one partner stands out with the other. Some gnags who try to be go legit be less like their compatriots try to stay together longer, but the result is mostly the same. For the Gnag, the chase is half the fun and life is oh so short.
Major Language Groups and Dialects
Most Gnag speak Common and Twin-tongue.
Common Dress Code
Gnags have very little in traditional clothing. They tend to dress in whatever they can find that fits and doesnt get away for their activities. A lot of time, they appear very shabby and dirty as a result.
Culture and Cultural Heritage
Most if not all Gnags revere The First Rat, who is believed to have stolen the divinity from the Queen of Lies and Greed. Due to the nature of their diety, its fully acceptable to misstrust and lie, especially to outsiders. They believe that if your cunning and intelligent enough, a few lies would not be a problem.
History
The first Gnag in recorded history are the Gnagi Islanders who gave the species it name. The Gnagi Islands were once supposedly lush forest islands, but the islads were ripped up and began to sink after Histyras attempt at destroyting the world. The Chimera on the island were trapped, and had to scavenge and fight one another for space and food as their home sank slowly into the oceans.
In time, the Chimera of the island would become Gnags. The gnags managed to not only surivive, but build a artificial island of sorts ontop of their now sunken home. Large floating barges were assembled while clinging to the little landmasses that still stay above the waterline. However, the material for these barges was scarce and they had to resort to anything they could find. So they sent out Grangs to find and pilfer from the other lands. Many of these Gnags did not come back after they found dry land however, preferring to stay where things were easier for them.
