The Twilight Academy

The Twilight Academy is an institution of higher learning, learning so high that those who teach it believe you need a sizable income and probably a letter of recommendation before they'll even consider you. Access to the Academy is highly restricted, and though it boasts one of the most diverse libraries in the world, it is accessible by only so much as 200 people at any one time. Many have cried for it's tomes to become public, to allow some outsiders to gain the library floor, but the Twilight Eyes insist that it alone retains the rights to approve entry. You might acquire a pass to use the library during certain hours, but the approval for such a pass is entirely at the discretion of the Eyes.

Organizational Structure

At the top sits the Headmaster, usually selected by the Watchers from among the most elite members of their order. He works to facilitate learning and adjudicate any disputes or punishments, as well as hiring or firing as necessary.
Just below the headmaster are the Professors organized into three levels:
  • Guarantors
  • Advocators
  • Professors
The Guarantors are overseers of their specific branch of learning, whether it be Arcana, History or Philosophy, it is their job to assure all that the knowledge coming out and going into their students is of the highest accuracy. The Advocators are sort of middle managers. They organize the Professors into smaller groups and collaborate on curriculum and strategy, as well as research new information and ways of teaching that might benefit their branch more. Professors are as they sound, the teachers on the ground, giving lessons on a daily basis and helping students learn where necessary. The Guarantors and Advocators rarely teach lessons, but when they do it's usually a more complex topic or one for students of the most advanced calibre, including some Professors.
After our teaching staff we find the students, close to the lowest rung, these are expected to learn and not much else. Until they can prove themselves worthy of graduation, they must remain quiet and studious at all times. Even those in the higher ranks are expected to behave with decorum at all times and often stifle the freedom of lesser students to gain some measure of control. They have four levels they fall into:
  • Inductees
  • Acclaimed
  • Thaumaturgists
  • Initiates
The Inductees are the highest level a student can obtain, this is a level beyond graduation. Those who have achieved this are worthy of joining the Twilight Eyes and are earning their place among the organization. There are only one or two students in this rank at any one time, and sometimes none at all. It takes exceptional promise, or exceptional politicking to get to such a position. For everyone else, there's Acclaimed. This status is for students who are officially graduated, either freshly, or long ago. They are known for their knowledge in many topics, and those who are still Acclaimed are usually students-for-life pursuing a single topic or branch with no thought for advancement, merely a desire to learn more. After this comes Thaumaturgists. This caste of students is for those who have achieved graduate level knowledge in their branch of choice. The name was originally granted to graduates of the Arcanum branch, but after the expansion of the branches many years ago, this term was adopted as the signifier for anyone who has gained proficiency in their topic of choice. This is aided by the fact that almost every student has some knowledge of magic. Finally there are the Initiates. They are the students who have not generated any sort of recognition among the staff of any branch. They are regarded as empty minds to be filled and nothing else, often treated as servants or errand-runners by anyone of a higher rank. This poor treatment drives many to achieve the next level as quickly as possible.

Architecture

If you are lucky enough to find your way inside those hallowed halls, you'll find yourself in a grand facility. The entry hall extends cathedral-like up 4 floors, reaching its zenith in the glass floor of the Headmaster's office. Beyond the tower the building extends in three wings out from that center spire. The eastern wing is the Library, consumed entirely by books and the devices used to contain them or peruse them. The Northern Wing is dormitories and the offices and living quarters of the professors, as well as the cafeteria. The Western wing is home to all the lecture halls, the last one which takes up the space of a whole amphitheatre, capping the end of the hall. Each wing has 3 floors and access to the Headmaster's Suites, so he might visit upon any section at his leisure. Below all of this there are several floors of basements, some set aside for dangerous experiments or private meetings, some set aside for pantries and storage. Some of these basements are locked away or blocked by various means, presumably to seal away some dangerous creation the students of the Academy wrought.
