The Marriage Cord
When an elf woman chooses someone she wishes to wed she begins a simple braided cord out of multi-colored leather or hempen strings. The first knot is made but no further until she and her beloved share a significant moment. For each one of these moments, special times that contribute positively to the relationship, she braids another knot. Depending on the standards of the woman these knots might either be very tight and many, or loose and large. When their braid is finished they will present it to their lover as a formal declaration of their intent to marry. If you spot an elf woman inspecting her cord, it is often because she is thinking of her love, wherever they may be.
