Freeing Blackfingers
General Summary
The Crusaders continued through the underground lair of the Golden Crow. After making their way through a door marked with a warning, the party encountered a massive corpse flower and did some weeding. Soon after, they had a less-than-cordial encounter with Bardryn Doldarun, a female dwarf blacksmith affiliated with the Golden Crow.
Exiting the secret headquarters of the thieves' guild, they once again connected with Kala Entarro, and they discussed their compensation for ridding the sewers of bodaks with Herim Galbuck, proprietor of the Wanton Witch. He pledged whatever assistance was needed in freeing Taren Torralyn d'Sivis from the Thaliost jail, but left it to the Crusaders and Anaxi Zephries to devise a plan.
Upon discussing their situation, it was determined that they would need to examine the path through the sewers that the Golden Crow made available to them before settling on their preferred method of extraction.
Dofi, using the flying carpet and a small, mechanical beetle, mapped the path through the sewers from the Wanton Witch to under the jail. Once reaching the Civic Center, she discovered a vast, underground chamber with openings directly into the plaza, presumably for storm runoff. While even her darkvision could not pick up any details, she heard the presence of two winged creatures in the black expanse. By sacrificing the fey Baron von Boar, she was able to escape the notice of these mysterious creatures.
Deciding the sewers were not the path they wished to take, the party fleshed out a plan involving prisoner transfer and forgery to be executed while the town was preparing for Rebirth Eve. Though well-developed, the plan encountered a few missteps early. Finally convincing the guards to turn over the prisoner and narrowly avoiding an encounter with their silvereye marauder, Agglomeraton, Castamir, and Garrett headed for their rendezvous point at the North Gate. After their progress attracted the notice of the townsfolk, Dofi turned Blackfingers invisible in an alley, and Amara (through the use of Disguise Self) took his place. While the gnomes (only one of them visible) fled the city on the back of a conjured dire wolf, the three guards and the "prisoner" continued to the North Gate without attracting any further undue attention.
There, they connected with Alethra Kessler and began their trek into the Silver Wood. The Cartophile parted ways with them, giving them one of a set of Bands of the Found and Lost. With this, the party could locate Zephries and vice-versa. After saying their farewells, the party ventured forth into the fey-touched wood.
Upon conversing with their new companions, several pieces of information were uncovered. Blackfingers told the party of the reason for his exile from Zilargo. His brother's infant daughter had been kidnapped about twenty years ago. It was assumed that Breland was to blame, but nearing the end of the Last War, when Zilargo and Breland became diplomatically close, the blame somehow was transferred to him, and he was chased out of the country. He has suspicions that his brother was influenced in this decision by some outside force.
Blackfingers also revealed that, while he could not make use of the vorpal shards that Garrett had collected from the bone devil in the monastery, a friend of his, Thorgrim Sonorath, the famed dwarvish battle smith, could surely do something with them. Additionally, Blackfingers felt he would be safest among the dwarves of clan Soronath in the Mror Holds. Alethra volunteered to find a natural portal to the Feywild, and guide the party to her home of Taer Syraen, the Winter Citadel, home of the Winter Eladrin. This would effectively get the party safely to Karrnath, and well along in their journey to the Mror Holds.
As they continued through the woods, the birds grew silent. The group heard the snapping of twigs and a heavy, raspy sound of breathing. From the wooded path behind them appeared a monster. Similar to the silvereye marauder, but at least twice its size, the party stared into the face of this metallic monstrosity.
