Nation of Anor

Written by Salen

The nation of Anor is located in Northern Tamia, situated between Crystal Lake and the Fields of Frost. The people of Anor are mostly human and Half-elven, with a sizable population of dwarves in the capitol city. Many villages can be found near the great river and Crystal lake, and are mainly farmsteads and fishing villages. During Frostfall these villages bundle up and hunker down as Anor is also known for its frigid winters, having more snowfall than the higher elevations. The 'lake effect' is the root cause of this and is why the Gearrails are equipped with the heavy metal snowpushers in their fronts. Family's get by with their earnings saved up from the year and some work for the Gearrails clearing the stations of snow for travelers.

Capitol City & Rulership

The capitol of Anor is Everloom The City of Light. This High towered city, built on the banks of Crystal Lake, is the picture of peace between races. Elven structures stand next to human dwellings that are furnished by dwarven smiths. The docks are filled with fishing boats in the warm months, with the population swelling with merchants. During Frostfall the lake freezes over and the boats are pulled out, making way for its other attraction. In Frostfall Anor is home to the legendary Winter carnival, an event that draws people from all four nations to see the wonders of the Gearsmith guild and to hear the many stories of the travelling bards that attend the festival. In 770 the King and Queen of Anor were killed in the brutal attack during the Winter carnival, and as of now the rulership is being handled by a group of merchants that answer to King Vallis of Garon'd. It's surviving heir, Hal'rin Everloom, is part of the resistance to stop Lord Vallis, but at the tender age of 8 he needs more than a little help to reclaim his throne.

Magic & Technology

Anor is home to Healing Adepts. These healers have a unique attachment to the Gods and can channel power through themselves and into another being, healing their wounds in a matter of seconds. This is different than the magic of the elves, which can heal using the element of Ether. This is concentrated and fast, knitting bone in less than a minute and even restoring lost limbs in a matter of hours.   Anor is also home to some of the most prestigious schools of science in Tamia. People come from all over to learn the intricacies of the human body, the mixture of chemicals, and even how to watch for weather. It is thought that the first Adept was also a scientist studying the body. The story goes that since he found that the human body contains a large amount of water, that the prayers of healing should include that element. No one knows if this is true, but it makes for a good debate in some scientific circles.

History

The history of Anor is like most other nations. After the humans came here from their shattered isles, they looked for a suitable place to start over again. They had found the faeries and other sylvan creatures of this land too strange and turned away from them, instead clinging to the beliefs of their Gods. They found the shores of the lake and started there, building slowly and working the land. After two decades the humans had Everloom set and dozens of other cities started. It was then that they had the first skirmishes against the elves. They tried to expand across the lake and met with resistance, but the humans were stubborn. Not long after that the fighting escalated, starting the First War. For years they fought against the elves, their magic always driving the humans back, yet they were one against many. The dwarves were fighting also, and the humans made an alliance with them, yet it still wasn't enough. Eventually Garon'd was drawn into the alliance and finally the war seemed to even out. That's when things turned dark.

Having Faith

With the war dragging on, the elves found a way to boost their already powerful magic by enslaving the faeries and went at the alliance with furious anger. The dwarves were the first to fall, retreating into their mountains in the south and pulling the rocks in after them. The humans, stubbornly, kept fighting; calling upon their Gods to help them fight back. While the priests had channeled little prayers before, now the Gods answered in force, giving their faithful powerful prayers to keep back the elves and light up the darkness. Humans still died by the hundreds, yet their sacrifice gave the faeries the resolve to fight back themselves, fighting fiercely against their imprisonment and finally gaining freedom. They fled to the safety of their own dwindling nation, Nym, and worked a great spell of vanishing, disappearing from the world for good. This left the boosted magic of the elves temporarily stagnant, and the humans fought on. years went by with no one side gaining any ground. Thankfully, as the years tolled on, a truce was formed.

Geography

The majority of the cities of Anor can be found near Crystal lake. This lake is rich in various kinds of fish and the fisherman know its coastline like the back of their hand. Still weather can be a devastating foe, and many a ship has been lost to intense storms that come across the wide water. Anor rests in the lower plains and as such has the most farming and fishing villages in all of Tamia second only to Syll. These are only active once Frostfall is over, as the snows are too deep to keep farming or fishing.

Sailing Ships

The one thing that most fisherman agree on is that technology has no place on the water. Every year the gearsmiths peddle a new boat or gearship to the local fishing guild s in Anor, and every year they are turned down. Fishing life is simple and the old fashioned sailing ships handle the weather and currents the best.

Elemental Focus

Each of the four nations are tied to one of the elements. When magic of that type is used in that nation it has a stronger effect than anywhere else across Tamia. The primary element in Anor is Water and magic cast here that involves that element sees the magic have more density then usual. This means that magic used to create ice or cold works at a supercharged state, inflicting more damage and being stronger than usual.

Winter Carnival

The Winter carnival is a legendary event that draws many visitors to the capitol city of Anor every year. The Gearsmiths always show up ready to unviel their latest designs for the public, and the traveling bards have camps around the city telling their stories to any who will sit and listen, often times to thsose that aren;t as well. It is held by the 27th day and lasts until the sunset of the 42nd day of Frostfall, culminating in a display of lightworks put on by the Gearsmith Guild and enhanced by elven mages.
