The Witch King of Old Narotz

And so the sky went black and the earth did tremble. The land split apart in a rapturous roar as motes of lightning tore the heavens asunder and the armies of Great King Charlet did quiver and break. In but a single day, when the Witch King of Narotz had fixed his gaze upon Charlet for his indiscretions and crimes, did the land weep in his grandeur.   Few individuals are steeped in as much mystery as the Witch King of Narotz. What is known of the Witch King is that he ruled from a spire similar to those of any modern wizard residing in Narotz. While his abode was humble, the power he commanded and the respect and reputation it earned him were not. The Witch King was feared and with his great power, Narotz took by force most of Goretz with only the Karlenian Empire residing in the north to keep him at bay.   It was said that the Witch King's power was one divined from powers of demonic origin. Often times, the Witch King's attendants claimed to have smelled the scent of sulfur and and heard gibbering whispers from his war tent in the late hours of the night on the campaign trail. The strength of the Witch King's prowess has long been a hotly contested subject and is quite possibly a mystery that will never be solved. Even the greatest of the Witch King's feats are hotly contested by historians of magic in the current day.   Late in the Witch King's reign, Emperor Charlet of the Karlenian Empire (known then as the Great King Charlet) attempted a truce with the Witch King of Narotz. However, the move was not in good faith. The Witch King had sent his wife, the sorceress known as Brynn, to parlay with the Emperor on his behalf. During the negotiations, Charlet had Brynn poisoned and had strung her corpse upon a cross to goad the Witch King into a heated battle and break the stalemate between the two empires.   Charlet had misjudged the Witch King. History has mostly forgotten Brynn or what she meant to the Witch King. But to him, she was the reason why he built his kingdom: to give her a place to be happy, where her joy could run unbridled and where their descendants could live without ever knowing strife or fear. And so the Witch King did abide by Charlet and take to the field of battle personally. But what Charlet had not anticipated was the unbridled, unchained fury that was brought down that day. Where historians disagree is largely in the dynamics of the Battle of Carrion Hill. Some argue that the prowess displayed that day was impossible prior to Ascendancy; that the Witch King's greatest spell was actually the combined might of a corps of wizards. Others argue that indeed, the Witch King's might was truly as capacious as described.   Regardless, Charlet lost his core army and his life that day as Carrion Hill was reduced to what is today known as the Damerung's Basin, named after the magic that was visited upon Charlet. In a single day, the Karlenian Empire was broken but so too was the Witch King. He disappeared from the pages of history shortly after and while accounts of his death vary in detail and description, his role in history was ended and the man was never heard from again as his own kingdom splintered and formed into new nations.
