The Twelve Peaks

Steeped in history and mysticism, the sense that you're stepping into a land grander than yourself follows you with every step. Make no mistake though; the politics are every bit as deadly and even more confusing than what you would find in any nation in Goretz.   With no exaggeration, the continent nation of the Twelve Peaks is the oldest on Eartha. Though the dynamics of the many clans that rule the Twelve Peaks change as often as the ebb and flow of the tide, the relationship the clans have with one another has never changed. Split into fourteen different clans with three independent territories, an outsider parsing through the connections, alliances, and rivalries could very quickly find themselves overwhelmed.   Every decade, an event to determine the rulership of the Twelve Peaks is called known as the Grand Duel is enacted in the Hidden City. From the Dragon's Throne, Lao Shan the great Dragon of the Peaks, sends missives to each of the clans from what he has observed over the past decade. Based on each clan's prosperity and land, each clan is granted a certain allotment of warriors to send to the Sacred City for their participation. There, the warriors face each other in a blood contest where the clan that emerges victorious is elevated in status. The head of the clan then presides from the Hidden City and rules over the Twelve Peaks.   Fortunes are known to change and change quickly. A powerful clan may find themselves at a severe disadvantage following a particularly aggressive Grand Duel where multiple clans put aside past rivalries in the name of defeating a more powerful enemy. Genius rulers may be assassinated, schisms may develop leading to a clan fracturing, or a clan may simply be absorbed by another during the myriad of smaller conquests that take place between Grand Duels.
