Painted Duck Raptor
Anasaraptor mallus
The Painted Duck Raptor is a piscivorous Galloraptorid found around the great lakes of Siccora specializing in hunting larger fish found far from shore. All duck raptors are capable of floating much like their namesake and diving like cormorants, using their long snake-like necks to strike at fish.
The Painted Duck Raptor is the largest of its genus; being slightly larger than the trumpeter swan. Unlike many aquatic avians, Duck raptors lack toe webbing, instead relying more on their tail and arms to swim, freeing their feet claws to assist in catching fish. The sickle claw, although much smaller than their eudromaeosaur relatives, is still useful in prey restraint when tackling larger fish such as the dire pike.
Duck Raptors form life long bonds with their mates, however there are exceptions to this rule; many duck raptors are known to mate with the opposite sex but bond with another of the same sex, often chasing off the one they mate with to raise the eggs produced together. Chicks are born precocial and with a waterproof coat of downy feathers. Within a couple hours, the chicks are ready to follow their parents into the water to begin honing their skills in the shallows. When tired or threatened, chicks can climb on the backs of their parents where their down camouflages perfectly into the plumage of the adults.
