Mûmakil
Oliphaunt tolkienensis
The largest mammalian herbivore of the Eastern Siccoran Savannah, the four tusked Mûmakil is a sight to behold. 8 meters tall at the shoulder, and possessing massive curved tusks, only the largest predators in the region can threaten adults. Much like other HE elephantids, herds are led by a matriarch and protected by a transitory bull, which is periodically swapped with other bulls during large gatherings of different herds.
Mûmakil enjoy a relatively uncontested food source in the form of the Terraformer Grass, a species of bermudagrass. While highly nutritious compared to other grasses and still fed upon by large herbivorous dinosaurs, Mûmakil can subsist purely on the grass, giving them an edge in drier periods.
Megafaunal mammals are normally restricted in size due to not being able to shed heat like similar sized dinosaurs, the Mûmakil however has independently evolved the ability to sweat efficiently in combination with being virtually hairless. Even with these adaptations, Mûmakil will still gather near watering holes to cover themselves in mud to shield themselves from the heat and biting insects.
