Grand Admiral of the Valerian Imperial Navy
Grand Admiral, officially Grand Admiral of the Valerian Imperial Navy, is the highest rank in the Valerian Imperial Navy. This rank has only ever been given to a few individuals throughout the empire's history. The two most famous Grand Admirals were Wilhelm Brenthoff and Maximillian Kelsen. This title is personally given by the Emperor himself in a special ceremony.
Qualifications
A individual needs to show excellent skill in naval planning, knowledge, and tactical ability both in and out of combat. They must also be chosen by the Emperor to become a Grand Admiral.
Appointment
When someone is promoted to the rank of Grand Admiral, a special ceremony is held at the Imperial Palace in the capital city of Valeria. They are personally given their rank insignia and ceremonial sword by the Emperor personally.
Benefits
Grand Admirals have the highest pay out of any rank in the Navy. They are given a seat close to the Emperor at all meetings and events and they have special quarters on all ships they command from.
Grounds for Removal/Dismissal
A Grand Admiral came dismissed for one of three reasons. They can be dismissed if they have committed a serious crime, abused their power, or worked with enemies of the empire during a time of war. They can also be dismissed if they have serious health issues but, if they get better, they can come back and be given back their title of Grand Admiral.
Notable Holders
The most notable holders of the rank were Wilhelm Brenthoff and Maximillian Kelsen. Brenthoff was given the rank in 1741 by Emperor Alexander V during the Valerian-Landerian War after Brenthoff essentially wiped out the entire Landerian Navy in the Battle of Cape Denmark. Kelsen was Head of the Admiralty from 1900 when Fleet Admiral Clarke retired due to his old age, to 1948. In 1945, during World War II, Kelsen was promoted to Grand Admiral after being a crucial part in winning the Battle of the Olympic Sea, the largest naval battle ever, for the allies and wiping out most of the Axis's naval power.
