It happened almost half a century ago, but people still talk about him as if it was a recent event. Their gaze casted down, voice low, a disappointed sigh sometimes.
No one can really believe it. The Fifth Manggala was supposed to put an end to the terror. And he did, but not in the way the prophecy told. There was no eternal peace following the showdown, there was no returned sense of security even after the big threat was gone. Evil still breed and it runs rampage on the street in the form of bandits and frauds.
The Fifth Manggala. What poor soul he was.
His birth was prophesied, though not publicized by the kingdom until when he was recruited. He had his life laid out in front of him. Grapes, girls, lazy naps at the end of the day. He was supposed to be a hero and claimed his happily ever after. After all, what fool would reject a life guaranteed by the Queen?
He wasn't ready, pitied the townspeople when he again came as a topic. He didn't even know who he had to face. We only called it The Abomination, so when he found out it was... They trailed off. He shouldn't be pushed too early.
Bullshit, snarked the other. It was all his fault.
Young people who never see him learned his name; through the tales of their grandparents, through the fictionalized life made into entertainment, and through the warning of the Queen. People who are old enough to remember him are divided to two; one grieved, and one cursed.
His name remained a living legend just as his existence. There's a rumour that said Johan the Fifth Manggala is still alive, somewhere, but nothing has been proven true.

Physical Description

General Physical Condition

Although physically fit having trained for years, Johan has asthma, and sometimes it would recur. However, as the Fifth Manggala, Johan possessed a tremendous strength, and a notable speed and agility.

Johan has a white skin that often looks really pale. His hair is black and wavy, often cut at nape-length. He's average height and a bit lanky compared to his peers.

Personal history

Childhood

It was like floating after the universe was just created.

Johan was born at the kingdom's heart, Alabancet, on a stormy night of June 18th. After his parents died in a car crash accident, Johan was taken and raised by his grandmother.
He grew up poor, living in a slum area near the dumpster. Johan would often help his grandmother, selling cookies and roaming the street in hope of finding trash that is still good enough to sell. There were times when Johan had to eat food out a trash can that might still be edible. He sometimes asked his grandma why do they live like that when other people he saw dress nicely and eat in cafetaria. Johan was vulnerable to loneliness, often times spending his time sitting alone watching kids his age go by with their parents, pondering why his parents have to be gone so soon. He told his grandma this one time, and decided to keep it to himself forever when he saw her face fall.
Johan befriended Finn, a poor boy who lived a road turn away, and they two became intensely close with each other. He soon knew of Finn's abusive mother. Johan often offered Finn to have a sleepover at his house, which Finn almost always turned down. They always spent time together, as the only enjas at their living area. Johan would often take Finn to look for garbage with him, and in return, Finn brought him nice food he stole from his mom's workplace. Johan found Finn really interesting, as he didn't mind Johan not talking much (or making weird sounds out of nowhere) and would instead chatter about his ambition to be a manggala.
Finn was Johan's only solace. As time went on, Johan got so attached to Finn he described himself as "rotating around him."

Serving the Kingdom

When he was seven, Finn asked if Johan want to come to the city hall, as news were spread that the Queen and Putri Nandini would come. Seeing how excited he was, Johan agreed. They walked for thirty minutes and hitchhiked on a truck to get there.
The Queen saw Johan and immediately recognized him. She called him, and demanded him to be brought to the palace for a military training "as he might be fit to be a manggala", to which Johan responded if she was mistaking him for Finn. Johan was then brought to the palace as of the Queen's order, and a heartbroken Finn walked back home alone.
Johan couldn't adjust to palace life well. He refused to talk to anyone and only communicated non-verbally (through gestures and writing) for months, making him punished multiple times by the teachers and dormitory administrators. He only started to warm up to Marhara, who was assigned to handle him, after they left him and gave him space.
Finding a new friend in Marhara, Johan did better academically and practically, smiling a lot more and eating more regularly. Marhara promised him that the Queen will let him meet Finn if Johan ranked one in his class. Motivated by this, Johan delved deep into his study, finding things that would be useful to him later on, and managed to achieve his goal. Marhara fulfilled their promise, and Johan met Finn again after a long time. The two reconciled and Johan introduced Marhara to Finn.
Johan frequently came to see Finn after that, with rare occassion of Finn coming to the palace instead. He would fund Finn's life (who already ran away from their neighbourhood) with the money he acquired from the kingdom (as part of the program he was forced to join). In the meantime, Johan became close with Marhara. Later they would said Johan is "the annoying little brother I never got a chance to grow up with."
He graduated top of his class and was enrolled in Arakartika's elite military academy, in which he excelled, and graduated a year earlier, recruited officially as the Fifth Manggala of the time. Finn came to the ceremony and congratulated him.
On a full moon night, Finn came to see Johan and bid him goodbye after confessing that he loved him. Johan never saw him again, tracking him down only to find nothing.

Betrayal of His Fate

You have to understand that I am nothing but a mere tide.

When the news were spread that a terror had begun in Acreotia, a walking demon called The Abomination, Johan got worried because the base of it was where Finn had been living. Lower class manggalas were deployed, Twelfth to Eighth. Then Seventh. Then Johan overheard a talk of ministers, of prophecies and monsters, and he learned of his fate that there was a prophecy that only the Fifth Manggala could defeat this evil. Before the Sixth Manggala was deployed, Johan asked to assist, and his request was granted. They took off to the location.
There, after walking around inspecting the damage the city got, they were greeted by The Abomination, who turned out to be Finn himself, now a half-demon. Johan was heavily shocked and suffered a second-degree burn to his leg after being attacked by Finn. The Sixth Manggala saved him before he could suffer any more damage. They teamed up to attack Finn, and when they succeeded, the Sixth Manggala almost killed him on the spot, but Johan stopped it. Johan confronted Finn about everything, to which Finn tried to attack him, before the Sixth Manggala forced him to talk. Finn then said that Johan had stole his only dream, and guilttripped him to believing that it was Johan's fault he ended up making a contract with a djinn. The Sixth Manggala felt disgusted and decided to execute Finn. This made Finn laughed. Johan intervened, saying it's his fate to end the evil once and for all. The Sixth Manggala gave Finn over to him, but to his shock, Johan took off carrying Finn. They were gone before anyone could catch them.

Johan doesn't like to talk much. He prefers to listen, and communicates in non-verbal ways if not needed such as gesturing and making simple noises ("ah" "oh" "yeah" "no).
However, Johan can communicate verbally well. He can even lead a meeting and give a speech if needed. Johan also won't shut up if talking about something he's passionate about.
He displays childish behaviour to people he's close with, such as poking Marhara and tell them he's hungry. When he doesn't know how to react, he often automatically laughs.

Johan loves literature. He spends much of his time dwelling on the palace's huge library, reading books like a man licking off a spoon clean.
He also loves nature. If not in library, Johan can be found riding his horse or simply walking around the garden.

Most people won't expect Johan to speak bahasa Indonesia with no accent, but that is if they're lucky enough to get him speak.
Johan tends to keep his sentences short and simple, almost childish. He makes weird noises all of a sudden, either because he gets bored or because he remembers something. He also makes noises such as "hm" and a simple yes or no if he doesn't want to talk.
