Earth 2113

Nearly a Generation ago in the midst of twenty-second century resource wars a near miss by a comet and the resulting meteor shower, and the few impacts went unnoticed for several years. The alien fungal spores carried within the stones in the comet unleashed an ever growing threat to Humanity.   This Infection came at the worst time and emulated humanities most feared diseases. At first it drove people mad with insomnia and strange cravings. Eventually the spore evolved to control its human host before and after death of the body and to use this host as a continuous vector for the infection.   For those first few years Humanity kept on fighting over peak oil, climate change, sea level rises and all the while further polluting the world. Wars were fought until the infection reached its first threshold. By this point there were thousands of infected all across the world. Infection Rates exploded just as the U.S. entered into a total war with China. The infection nearly wiped all human life from the planets humid regions within the next year and a half. China, Russia, The U.S., and India took to nuking their own cities to control the infection.   All the while the sea levels and radiation levels continued to rise. Life dwindled elsewhere as much of the worlds remaining inland regions have rapidly become more desert-like, dried up, dead and covered with ash.   It's into this world this bleak, world of stark contrasts, and no known civilization that you've found yourself.
