State of the World

Don't worry. Everything is going to be fine.
— Believer of the state of the world conspiracy

The state of the world is a conspiracy theory propagated by the anti-obscurist movement. It claims that all warnings by obscurists, and everyone else for that matter, about a threat to humanity are lies. They even go as far as to deny the rise in birth defects. A popular part of the theory claims The Pulse never happened, even though it is commonly accepted among scholars and historians that it did.

Rise in Birth Defects

The defects we see are not always life altering. One of the more common defects is a change in part of the infants skin. This can be a patch of scaly skin, or skin that looks like it was once ripped apart.
— Excerpt from a medical study
For several years a worrying occurrence is happening all over the world. The number of babies born with some sort of defect is on the rise. What is even more worrying is the fact that many of these defects have never been seen before. It is not only the obscurists who look at the similarities between these new types of defects and the mutations witnessed in Inflicted. Doctors, midwives, and healers share the same concerns. Yet for the believers of this conspiracy these are all lies. In fact they even deny that birth defects are a reality. When confronted with a baby with a defect they often come up with absurd theories just to be able to deny that it is real.

Inflicted Fluff

One of the more bizarre theories circling around claims The Inflicted are people dressed up in monster costumes to keep the rest of humanity in check. Two years ago a group of seventeen believers set out to prove their theory right. They walked out of Mehrula's city gates with the intention to live out in the wilderness for two days. They had camping gear and food with them. And the belief that their theory was right. Their intention was to return after two days with prove for their theory. None of them were ever seen again. Search teams later recovered their bones which proved the group was ambushed and eaten by an Oghwen mere hours after their departure from the city.
It is all a lie!

Heh. Very nice!   Starting with this quote:

Don't worry. Everything is going to be fine.
  and then ending with...
It is all a lie!
brilliant way to bookend the article. The topic is serious for your world but I have to admit, the two quotes made me grin.

If find it interesting reading conspiracy theories in the real world - it's incredible what some of them say. This one made me think of a few parallels we have and that really made the article come alive. I like how you use the quotes because for me it gives loads of insight into the myth and the people behind it in a couple of sentences. :)

I know it's bad, but I giggled when I read those guys were killed mere hours after they set out.   I love the idea of these people denying the truth even when it's in front of their own eyes. The section on birth defects was particularly interesting.

Thank you. :) It is ironic how they wanted to prove that monsters aren't real, yet in their attempt they proved themselves wrong.
