Archbishops line

History
Far to the East on the island of Aktish religion bears great importance. Churches there are large and priesthoods are powerful. This means that those who lead churches gain stature in society and naturally they wish to keep their power in the family. As such high positions in religious institutions are often hereditary this has resulted in the creation of several large religious families. Over the years they intermarried mingling with one another creating a far larger family which held stake in over half the churches of the country it's influence only grew when the nation they were based in was overthrown by a group of religious fanatics. It transpired that the new fundamentalists known as the set of Edd were more than willing to work with the old guard family and the power of the Archbishop line was never challenged. From then on many of them have been prominently involved in politics, some from the line have even founded religious schools and universities.   ‘It is not the government who rules this nation it is the people who rule this nation but it is religion that rules the people’ quote from the history of Aktish by Willhelm Verdenna
Infighting
The archbishops line also has some large problems within its ranks. The family schemes and plots against itself and like a wasps nest engaged in civil war the consequences can be dreadful for everyone. The largest church in the city placed in cathedral square is highly contested. Positions in that church come with great benefits and almost everyone would accept a lowly position there over leadership of any other church in the country. But there can only be so many priests in one church. Infighting is common, brother may poison brother. Everyone fights for power and very few ever grasp it. Some notable occasions of violence include an incident in which duke Wilson stabbed his father out of rage for being written out of his inheritance. It has once or twice happened that members of the family have conscripted small mercenary armies to remove their competition. The family has some four hundred living members but quite a few have chosen not to get involved with the church out of fear.   ‘Pious men are often the most viscous and scheming for each of them believes god is on their side’ quote from religious ethics by Graham Ragson
