King Danvar

King Danvar Clach (a.k.a. The antiquated king, Runt of the monarchy)

Physical Description

General Physical Condition

Danvar Clach is a broken man in spirit and body. His legs are shaky and weak and his body is frail.

Body Features

Danvar has been unlucky in terms of genetics. Since birth he has has weak bones, weak muscles and stunted growth. Compared to other mountain dwarves Danvar looks more like a gnome in appearance. He has skinny arms, shorter legs than he should and where most of his kind have a barrel chest he has a flat rib cage that doesn't make an impact against his clothing.

Facial Features

Fairly unassuming in looks, he has a scruffy and unkempt beard that reaches to just below his neck and covers the lower third of his face. His pale grey ears peer out from below bushy eyebrows and sit resting just above a largish nose. Barely visible beneath the messy black hair are smallish ears that press close to the head.

Identifying Characteristics

Despite numerous physical disabilities, he looks like an average dwarf except for his unusual height which is closer to that of a gnome than a dwarf.

Physical quirks

Davar walks with a cane to help disguise his limp and trembling legs and when seated he will rest his legs and feet against the chair and his arms to the rests to hide the shaking in his limbs.

Apparel & Accessories

As a member of the royal family he has access to the best tailors within the city however to best honour his deceased family and to try and make himself appear more impressive Danvar often wears old style ceremonial robes and ostentatious clothing which once highlighted the wealth and strength of the monarchy but in more modern times it just alienates Danvar from his people.

Personal history

King Danvar Clach is the current head of the Clach royal family. He stands a the end of a long line of kings, queens and, even further back, tribal chieftains. His family has reined over Ocros for centuries, however most of this time they served as a supporting role to the military leaders that actual run the city.   When Danvar was young his father, Baern, and his mother, Kathra, were the reining monarchs. For a time he enjoyed life with his two older siblings a brother, Harbek, and a sister, Ilde. However once his siblings were old enough to properly take part in state affairs he was left alone while they were taught the ways of statesmanship. This is due to Danvar's genetic weakness. He suffered from a fragile body, weak and disfigured limbs and jaundiced skin. Over his lifetime Danvar has visited and been visited by all manner of healers and clerics to try to cure him, however nothing has worked and the only result of these treatments is that his lifespan is increased but his symptoms persist.   When his parents grew old and retired and then passed, Harbek took the throne to rule. During this period Danvar spent most days painting, reading and pursuing the arts. It was a peaceful time and while Danvar was upset about his life he was glad that he still had his family and could still live in relative comfort. His world was shattered when Harbek was suddenly struck with an aggressive illness and passed after days of agony. After a period of mourning Ilde took the throne. After a few years things returned to normal, although Danvar was lonely without his brother and sister, now that she spent most her time ruling. This shadow of loneliness hung over Danvar but he tried to persist for his sister's sake. Once again this peace was ruined as Ilde was similarly struck with disease and soon passed. Alone and ignorant of royal protocol, Danvar reached for his parents and siblings advisers and isolated himself for years to learn how to be a good king.   However once he came out of this exile he realised that his role was ceremonial and that the people didn't care about him. With this came an apathy and disrespect for his duties and he withdrew from the public, Only appearing at the most crucial and important events. This distance has led to a massive change in the public's view of Danvar and of the Clach family. With his reputation tarnished Danvar suffered an even greater depression than ever before, one which he never expected to recover from.   As his world crumbled round him and funding for the royals became lower and lower Danvar felt he had hit the bottom of the barrel and that there was no reason to get out. That's where Cassandra entered. She had met him at a few functions when his parents still took him and the two had many hobbies in common. She went to him in his darkest time and helped to bring some repute back to the royal title. Their wedding was smaller than most royal weddings of old but it did turn the Clach fortune around. Cassandra took over many smaller ceremonies as queen and is fairly well liked among the people and by association so was Danvar.   At present the royal family still works on the smallest scale they ever have but there is a slight hope for the continuation of the line and one day a potential rise back to greatness.

Education

Danvar received a good quality education from tutors and experts in many fields. However it was never deemed worthwhile to train him in statesmanship as he had siblings who would, along with outlive him, be in line for the throne first. Because of this Danvar is a smart individual and a cultured man but he lacks knowledge in the critical area of his life and he is resentful he never got taught these skills sooner.

Employment

For most of his life Danvar assumed he would never have a job. He would live in luxury in his family home and would never have to touch the official duties of his parents and siblings. The reality of his situation is the opposite. Not only does he have a job, he has the jobs of every one of his family members

Social

Religious Views

The gods never helped Danvar, clerics, healers and priests all failed to fix his ills only succeeding in delaying his death to average life expectancy. While he never speaks out about it, he hates religion and the religious people within his city and without. He believes mortals would be better off keeping their money, property and their resources to spend on personal goals and material things.

Wealth & Financial state

Danvar commands the wealth of the Clach family which for a monarchy is a disappointing amount. The governing powers within Ocros give the monarchy enough money to maintain the Ebony Palace and to staff it as well as pay for the food and water consumed. Any other wealth is down to the family to procure. Historically this involves either public donations or having family members join the military and earn a wage.   For Danvar and his wife this means subsisting on the bare minimum as most the public don't care enough to donate much and the lack of children mean no one can take up a job to earn money. This meant that early in his reign Danvar was forced to fire most of the help that his well off parents had hired.   Still this bare minimum of royal money is a large amount for most people, amounting to a similar sum to that of a merchant in charge of an inter kingdom business chain. Most of this money is spent on food and other such necessities but there are rumours that Danvar stores a large portion to help reinvigorate the royal family after he passes.
