Isle Kobolds

Mainland kobolds are not known for their crafting ability. Most of their reputation stems from the warren-like homes and their ability to build traps. This is because they are in competition for their preferred habitat, caves and the foothills of mountains.   All kobolds are known as adequate miners. Most folk do not realize just how expert the kobolds are however. The chaotic nature of their warren leads most to believe that kobolds are slipshod engineers and just follow fractures in the rock. While this fracture methodology following is true for their warrens, their mines are carefully planned and reinforced.   Isle kobolds are master smiths. Due to their reverence of dragons, they have much easier access to the very rare metals. The kobolds were also the first to discover the secret of turning iron into steel. With access to raw adamantine ore and intense fire of the gold dragons (and the occasional red), they developed the process of refining it into a usable form. Using knowledge gained from their mastery of steel, they knew that since the new metal was stronger, it could be used in smaller quantities and yet retain the same strength.   With their great breadth and depth of metallurgical knowledge, they helped the elves master mithril. However, the elves did bring one thing to the process. The elves were the ones to figure out that mithril was much lighter than other metals and so it did not need the mass of steel or adamantine.   The isle kobolds are free from the pressures of dwarves and goblins and are able to focus on their ability to smith metals into all sorts of great things. They make metal fitting used in the great kingdoms around the world. They craft unique tables, with legs made out of steel, and a top carved from various stones.   Every dragon emperor's coat of arms was crafted by the master armorers of the Isle. The symbols of the lesser kings are simply painted up their shields. The art work of the emperor's is embossed and engraved on the shield. Then the coats are enameled. This process makes them not only works of art, but functional armor as well.
