The Shipwreck Tavern

The Shipwreck Tavern is one of the newer taverns in the free city of Sailwater. It was built from an old carrack that washed up on the southern hillside of the city during the devastating tsunami 27 years ago. A group of retired adventurers bought the land, repaired, and reused the broken ship as an interesting tavern that caters to all walks of life in the city. Everyone from dwarf to elf to halfling and gnome can find delicious food and interesting drinks inside. The menu items have great price ranges as well allowing all incomes to partake in wonderful meals and drinks. An additional attraction besides its unique shape is the incredible view of the harbor and sea beyond. Many people flock to the tavern to watch the city's famous boat regatta and enjoy the festivities.

Purpose / Function

This building was originally a large Carrack sailing ship. During the Great Tsunami of Sailwater in 716 A.S., it broke free from its mooring and was washed high up on the hill overlooking the bay and free city of Sailwater. Here it remained abandoned and unclaimed and was eventually purchased along with the land by Bronst Bouldercrash, Santo Wheatflower, and Clive Canter Callus. They reinforced the ship and turned in into a tavern with the best view of the harbor and the Triennial Sailwater Boat Regatta.

Denizens

Although there is a wide array of individuals who frequent this establishment, several have made it a point to visit on a more regular basis. These regulars may appear once a week or come during the weekends, while others prefer to visit once a month, however those that begin to turn up every day are watched quite closely by Raimus to determine their intentions.   Some of the more unusual regulars are:   Sedge Gamern, an excitable half-elf, who is always on the lookout for someone to play him in any number of bar games. This often leads him to gambling a little too much, but he usually manages to break even before the end of the evening.   Old Dolg, a kind but crazy old man with a wide smile, who when deeply intoxicated claims to be ancient dragon trapped in human form. He made a deal with the owner to sweep the floors every day before opening and after closing, in exchange for a permanent table in the corner by the minstrel.   Sottos, who only comes in on random weekends. He always asks for a table near the door and claims that he is waiting for his twin brother, Notton. So far they have not met up at the tavern.   Notton, who only comes in on random weekends. He always asks for a table near the door and claims that he is waiting for his twin brother, Sottos. So far they have not met up at the tavern.   Hairy Benn, a tall hairy man who keeps to himself and who comes in once a month for a couple of days in a row and always orders the same drink, Moon Mead, quite a bit actually.   The one that the servers refer to as The Mage. He is a frail, thin man who’s gray hair makes him look much older than his actual age. He wears old style red robes and always sits by the fire, even in the summer. He only ever orders hot water that he then mixes with his homemade tea.

Alterations

Shortly after being purchased, Bronst and his companions straightened the ship upright, secured it in place, and repaired the hull with matching white oak. Bronst turned the hold into a micro brewery and dug a basement storage area beneath it, while Santo built a large kitchen and washroom on the port side of the ship, away from the harbor views, and Clive went about redesigning the interior with red cedar flooring and walls.   All three levels of the ship were redesigned with the same basic floor plans. The rear, stern quarters were turned into private meeting rooms, while the bow, front section was fortified to hold a large magnificent stone fireplace. On the non harbor, port side was constructed the lengthy bars, while the harbor, starboard side walls were filled with dozens of large clear glass windows displaying the spectacular water views.  Additionally stairs near the stern section lead up to the next floor and two doors on either side of the bar lead to an attached kitchen and attached washroom.

Defenses

This buildings main defenses are the owners, employees, and patrons that can be found inside of it on any given day.  Many would be surprised to know that the catapults found on the upper castle decks are not just for decoration and ambiance but are also fully functional.

History

The Shipwreck Tavern began as an old carrack that was either abandoned or lost during the terrible tsunami of 716 A.S. After a year of sitting on a hill outside of the city of Sailwater, an intrepid adventurer decided to purchase the land and ship with the intent to fix it up and turn it into an eye catching establishment.  After a year of repairs and interior design, it was finally ready to be relaunched as "The Shipwreck Tavern".

Tourism

Despite its location near the outskirts of the city, the tavern still attracts many citizens of Sailwater and visitors alike. Famous for its great views of the harbor and city and its reputation for great food and welcoming atmosphere, the Shipwreck Tavern serves patrons year round. On any particular day or time the tavern will be about half full, with weekends being a bit more popular. However when the Boat Regatta begins, the tavern swells to full capacity and additional outside seating is opened up. For a little more coin, the top castle decks, usually reserved as private meeting rooms, are opened up for dining and spectacular views as well.   In anticipation of the boat regatta season, people flock to Sailwater from across the lands to see the race, partake in the fine foods and savory drinks, and buy and sell their wares. Over the years word has spread that the Shipwreck Tavern has the best views, friendliest service, and tastiest food and drink.

There's a certain irony in port-side not facing the harbor. Question: Is the crow's nest intact? That sounds like a place to have a KILLER view!!

Good question. The crows nest has been rebuilt but is not open to the general public, although certain officials have asked about reserving it. Admittedly I was not able to finish all of the aspects of the tavern, including the map before the deadline, but there are plans to work on it in the near future.
