The Broken Spirit

The Broken Spirit can be found in the once great city of Templum. Once a beacon to all religions and boasting of the greatest number of divine buildings, the city now shuns and discourages all worship. The Broken Spirit is locally known as a dive bar/tavern and general place of ill repute. Formerly a religious temple, it now stands as an out of the way watering hole for the lowest common denominator in the city. It is run by a one-armed dark elf, who seems to be oddly at ease with the bar scene, the city, and the surface world in general.

Purpose / Function

This building was originally constructed as a magnificent temple to Bastion, the God of Endurance and Perseverance. It has lasted for hundreds of years, but nothing has tested its own endurance and perseverance quite like its current state of affairs. In 557 A.S. the temple was ransacked, desecrated, and converted into a seedy tavern, complete with a gambling room and brothel.

Architecture

This structure was originally built by a group of religious dwarf masons from the Guan Din kingdom. It's style closely resembles surface buildings favored by the Sharbon dwarves, having precise geometry, sturdy rock foundations, and large open soaring ceilings. The large, hemisphere roof sits firmly upon the perfectly square first level construction. The entire building is constructed of fine grained, black and white diorite rock. The roof and walls were polished glossy smooth and bas-relief images of holy importance were carved into the walls. The doors were made from heavy rose oak and adorned with large, white topaz and black tourmaline gemstones.

Alterations

After the take over of the city, the temple's new owner, Mort Cutkill and his dark elf partner Narinor Darkwell made several changes to the building. First, all religious icons were destroyed, melted down, or sold off. Second, all divine imagery was destroyed, including chipping away of the bas-relief carvings on the wall. They were replaced with crude, vertical stripes roughly equivalent to each other. The entry door was stripped of its precious gems and coated in the blood of its previous occupants.   At the direction of Mort Cutkill, the first floor was quickly converted into a makeshift bar and because of the high ceilings, a second floor was constructed above it to serve as a gambling loft. The oversized open basement was divided into several small rooms in order to store the beer and liquor and to also sever as a brothel.   When Narinor Darkwell took over, he greatly enhanced the quality of all aspects of the building. The makeshift pub bar was upgraded and turned into a proper tavern, complete with kitchen service. A new front door was installed. The second floor gambling loft was reinforced and became an organized gambling room. A small set of private rooms were added to a new third floor near the top of the hemisphere dome. The already oversized basement was expanded even further, creating more rooms for storage, micro brewing, and of course hospitality.

History

The building known today as The Broken Spirit, was originally built in the year 183 A.S. by a group of Sharbon masons led by Scorax Stonebrow out of the dwarven kingdom of Guan Din. It was created to be a great temple to the god Bastion and honored him for centuries.   Then in 557 A.S. the city of Templum was overtaken by an army from the Kingdom of Ungeheuer with the assistance of the Black Sky Syndicate working in the background. At this time the government changed hands and all clerics and priest were either driven out or killed on the spot. All religious items were confiscated and monuments and temples destroyed. The great temple of Bastion was captured by Mort Cutkill and converted into The Broken Spirit at this time.   Eight years later, in 565 A.S. Mort Cutkill was killed in barroom brawl orchestrated by his partner Narinor Darkwell. As a member of the Black Sky Syndicate, Darkwell was ordered to start tying up loose ends and brought another important building and social outlet under the direct control of the syndicate. He now assumed full control of the bar and made several upgrades at this time.   Currently The Broken Spirit serves as a seedy tavern, black market, and information exchange for the Black Sky Syndicate.

Tourism

Although the type of clientele has improved drastically from the early days, it is still not a place to take your mother. All races are welcome here if they have the coin, and it is often frequented by angry drunks, degenerate gamblers, handsy thieves, addicts, shady conmen, and all sorts of ne'er-do-wells. If one is looking to buy or sell on the black market, this is a good place to start.

"It is run by a one-armed dark elf, who seems to be oddly at ease with the bar scene..." This. This sentence convinced me to love The Broken Spirit. ;D
