The captains voyage

Somewhere far out at sea a single ship gracefully made its way through the waves, a favorable wind at its back. The captain of the vessel stood at its prow vigilantly observing the horizon. The sea was only lit by the moon and stars of the night sky yet he still watched on, seeking his elusive objective. Only he knew what the true purpose of the voyage was, the word among the crew was the usual, another hunt for elusive treasure and artifacts. What the captain truly wanted however was a location. On a supposedly ancient map, he had found clues leading him on a several months long hunt, he hoped this current heading would take him to the end of that endeavor.   As the captain kept his eyes on the horizon he spotted an odd anomaly, a strange fog in the distance. The captain fixing to have a closer look climbed the net attached to the tall mast up to the crows nest, the lookout gave his captain a quizzical look but begged no questions and simply stood aside. He at first tried his spyglass from the vantage of the crows nest, he however found that it was insufficient for the task at hand. instead he utilized the mounted telescope he had acquired for this very purpose. The captain gasped in fascination at what he saw, in the distance there was indeed a deep fog obscuring the horizon but it seemed to shine and glitter with a thousand blinking motes of dim light. Noticing the curious look on his lookouts face he stepped aside from the telescope allowing him to see for himself, the lookout gave a similar reaction though rather than fascinated excitement was left with a rather worried look on his face. The captain attempted to reassure the lookout that there is likely no danger to the phenomenon and simply moved on to giving out orders to the crew.   The orders the captain gave were simple, turn the ship towards the fog. The crew with some amount of hesitation followed their captains orders despite their fears, many of them had heard strange tales of ships disappearing in similar fog such as the one they had found.   The ship now nearing the fog allowed for much closer observation, the captain could tell it was strange indeed. The almost wispy lights within were shifting around almost as if they carried their own will. The captain being the ever vigilant explorer kept the ship on its due course. The sea around and inside the fog was oddly calm and shallow, soon reefs and small rocky protrusions emerged from the water indicating land! In the throes of his excitement the captain did not notice the shifting shadows looming in the the din of the fog. The crew however did notice when one of the men was dragged screaming off the side by some slimy purple tentacle! Chaos then erupted as the crew and the captain realize what happened, men ran for their weapons, manning cannons and arming guns. They prepared for the fight of their lives...
