The Night Father
“Beware prying eyes of blue and white they glow all through the autumn nights” - Common Elven saying about the Night Father.
The Night Father is a common myth and folk legend spread throughout all of Midvail. The exact source of The Night Father myth is unknown and the exact story has been altered through time and by different cultures.
The Night Father is described as humanoid, with blue and white skin that hangs on to large bones. The Night Father is said to have 2 glowing white eyes and a grin on his face, pulled tight by rigor mortis. In some folk tales, The Night Father is an Orc, in others he’s a cursed human or a Genasi. What is consistent is that The Night Father is always blue in coloration, with glowing eyes and an aura of cold around him.
The Night Father’s very existence has always been questioned throughout history. Most stories of The Night Father have to do with children not doing their chores, leading most to believe that the tale is just told to scare kids into behaving. Others believe that The Night Father is a symptom of delirium caused by Pnumonia, hence The Night Father’s close association with the cold. Some believe that The Night Father truly does exist, after all, stranger creatures exist on Dioya
In Literature
The first recorded tale of The Night Father was written by the Halfling Glenarm poet Valdon Herra in the 2-2-4-1 “Drunken Stumble” style:
A young dwarf of one and one years
Whose youth prevented all fears
Refused to sweep and to scrub
Instead he made merry in pubs
And as he turned home
He decided to roam
But he heard a moan
And felt so alone
So he ran and ran from that moan.
This boy was always a bore
Ne’re bothered to shut the damn door
His mother would scream and would scold
This boy wasn’t bothered by cold
But suddenly then
A hand creeped on in
With fingers of chalk
It pulled to a lock
And the boy sat in silence in shock.
This boy’s bed was safe and was warm
This boy felt an oncoming storm
In the shape of this ghastly claw
He was hunted he knew worst of all
T’was deep in the night
The door shutting fright
Loomed far over him
And showed him a grin
With a chill and a scream
The boy felt it lean
And in to his ear
The last thing to hear
Was Always. Shut. Your Door.
