Aquanian Species in Dinas Emrys | World Anvil

Aquanian

A humman like species that live underwater and have adapted to depth and low-light, developed a level of technology / chemistry to survive. They have magical items (to aid with tech) as stationary objects that are build into the city (like a shield) They can breath underwater, but only for a limited time. Domes the size of a city underwater are common. Their tech is similar to the Angeali and they have biological similarities with Seaminsk

Basic Information

Anatomy

Adapted body compacted and able to withstand the pressure deep below the surface. The have lungs that are filled with water and capable to substract air from water (but it is not enough to keep underwater for prolonged periods of time (avg 15 to 24hr). Inside the dome they do not need to breath water and they can do with just a little amount of air. The are susceptible for freezing (although they can sustain low temperature water, not low temperature air) and dehydration. They need water in their lungs for the most part. they have two arms and two legs with small fins attached, their feet and hands are optimised for water movement. They are capable of walking, but lack stamina. (excpetions exist) Hands and feet have low dexterity but great strength.
they have a neck with expandable skin, comfortable for them to lift their head back during swimming. Double eyelids to protect eyes and sharpen eyesight under water. Their eys are extra suscpetible for light while the protective translucent eyelids are closed.   They have no real visible nose, the ears are closed membranes, protected by perforated skull. They have small razor sharp teeth and some develop even small fangs under or upper (rarely both). Teeth can be used as weapons during close quarter combat. Broken teeth grow back. (3-5mm per month)

Genetics and Reproduction

A group of two to four Aquanians moves to a secret outside location, outside the dome, where they have food, air and other needs. They repoduce by following a long and enduring dance. The ritualistic dance ends with dropping multipe strings of eggs in a protective pocket in the floor. From this moment the group ferociously defend their lair and protective pocket against deep sea lurking monsters that smell the new eggs.

Inside the protected lair the eggs merge and form one, two (and seldom three) protohuman that grow in their flexible eggshells (or cocoons) where the embryo slowly merge and form, then adapt to the water environment and become protohuman. The group stays together (except the one defending) until the protohumans finally stop merging into protohuman(s). The partners split up duties to go out gather food, hunt and eat.

Every member dictates his or her part of a name for the newformed protohuman. names can be merged together when two namers agree. a Three name merger can also happen but is rare and a four name merger is almost never heard of.

Growth Rate & Stages

6-14 months body becomes consious brain understanding
14 months - 3 years development of body and deeper consiousness of the mind learns to swim, learns to talk and waterbreath waterbreath is a painfull process
3 years - 15 years schooling, learning and gaining knowledge knowledge and facts -
15 years - 35 years combat training or other usefull training. job, mating capabilities -
35 years - 40 years some develop a small flat dorsal fin they are better at everything. leadership

Ecology and Habitats

They prefer to live deep underwater in their domes. They create tight groups and only those with the dorsal fins are capable and willing to live a more solistic life on the surface.

Dietary Needs and Habits

eat: water plants, fungae, deep sea fish, oisters and tiny living squids (delicatesse) they dont drink like hummans, they 'drink' water with strong -fermented- additive 'air-mixture' created in a closed airtight and dry jar. They suck the water vapor through a straw like a tube (made from hardened (dryed) tentacles of colored squids. (the color makes quality and taste) like hummans smoke a pipe or waterpipe

Additional Information

Perception and Sensory Capabilities

underwater hearing, high sensitivity and ability to shut out hard / loud noises. They can hear very high pitched sounds. They have na great sense of smell but almost no taste. They love food with particular smells. Their fin-tips enable them to feel currents, temperatures, acidity and other water related. extra sensory: some of them have a very keen sense/feel about the water, enabeling them to feel what happens around them in a few kilometers around. (this is however, rare and looks like a premonition kind of sense.)
