The Grand Empero Wisp Myth in Didome | World Anvil

The Grand Empero Wisp

The island continent Cressebore is shrouded in mystery and lore. It is regarded as a hostile inpenatrable land covered in Scourge Wisps. It is rumored that the Wisps are are commanded by one Grand Empero Wisp who controls all the other wisp and is consumed with a desire to expand his colonies across the land. Their are multiple versions of the tales told by and for many people across Didome.

Summary

The tales revolve around the notion that all the scourge wisps are commanded by a Grand Empero wisp. This wisp is commonly portrayed as as intelligent as a human and able to direct his swarm by thought alone. Many of the tails revolve around a "firsthand" account of how a sailor narrowly escaped a encounter with the Wisp Empero.

Historical Basis

These tales date from around the 2500's when many of Didomes islands and continents were being explored. Rumors and tales would circulate about Cressebore a evil land consumed with swarms of creatures filled with a unnatural hatred. As these tales developed and more explorers discovered how these swarms lived in colonies, the myth of one grand wisp developed as was passed down in whispered tones in bar frequented by sailors and adventures.

Variations & Mutation

While most people hear of the tale as a first hand account of escaping from the Wisp, Some tales focus on supposed sighting of wisp warriors flying across the seas to start colonies in other parts of Didome. The people on the Cradcress Islands tell their children about how the Grand Wisps soldiers love to pray on tired young children, so they better make sure they sleep during their rest minutes.

Cultural Reception

Most people are skeptical of the tall tales told by sailors in bars, however the tale fits in to a tradition of many tall tales about the island of Cressebore. So many people are not inclined to visit to figure out if the myth is true or not.
