Pelonia

Pelonia is the country at the heart of an expansive empire that ranges from the southern foothills of the Greywall Mountains, south across the Sands of Devouring and all the way west, across the jungles and rainforests of Stoasue to the coastline of the Blade. Pelonia is a meritocracy, ruled by the Emperor Jengam con Lanre. As expansive as it is, Pelonia has absorbed many smaller nations into itself and boasts a wide array of races and ethnicities among its people, though is primarily made up of centaurs

Structure

Pelonia is a meritocracy, ruled over by an Emperor who is elected by the heads of the tribes, who are in turn elected by the tribal members themselves. This means that in theory anyone can become Emperor. Pelonia is incredibly inclusive and cosmopolitan. Have absorbed various other nations into its borders whose citizens are afforded all of the same rights an opportunities as tribespeople from the ancestral homeland of Pelonia.

Culture

In its beginnings, Pelonia was a nation comprised mostly of centaurs, divided into herds who led a nomadic existence, roving the plains and low foothills. Uniting under a single banner they began to expand their territories in brutal wars of conquest, offering their defeated foes the choice of absorbsion or death.   Pelonia has a reputation for being strict and harsh in its approach to upholding laws with crimes that are considered petty by many other nations, such as theft, being punishable by death. This means that there is very little crime within the city walls of the empire and roving, incredibly mobile patrols on the roads and in the wilderness acts as a deterrent to most bandits.   Pelonia is a Warrior nation that respects strength and personal sacrifice above all else.

History

After migrating to Dharguun from the Feywild the centaurs settled in the great grassy plains of Pelonia. While there were and are many herds two began to emerge as the most powerful; the Lagonna Merchant Families and the Pheres Tribe who were prolific raiders. Pelonia existed as nothing more than a loose collection of centaur herds and other races for a long long time before the Pheres Tribe took it upon themselves to unite the herds. With all the Centaurs brought together with one purpose the Pheres Tribes set them to raiding other races, conquring them and offering them the same riches they enjoyed if they would join.   This carried on for 5 generations, with each Emperor seeking fatter and richer conquests. Their expansion has allowed the Lagonna Merchant Families access to all nations east of the Sword to trade with, bring economical strength to the Empire.

Demography and Population

Centaurs: With the upper body of a humanoid and the lower of a horse, they make up the majority of the population of Pelonia and the core of the army. Hailing from the vast, unbroken grassland at the heart of their country.   Orcs/half orcs: Hailing from the far north in the lower peaks of the Greywall, orcs and their kin are vicious warriors with green skin and sharp fangs.   Humans: Their settlements are dotted about Pelonia with a high concentration south of the Cut, on the border of Eshen.   Shifters: The shifters of Pelonia originate from small settlements in the eastern Arwan Hills. Many prosper finding employ in the Pelonian army.   Bugbears: Sharing the far noth with the Orcs, bugbears make their homes in the forests at the feet of the Greywall mountains.    Elves: The Elves of Pelonia are magically inclined with even the least talented having some degree of magical ability. They reside in high towers, over looking the wild plains of Pelonia.

Territories

Pelonia

These wild grassy plains are the ancestral homelands of the Pelonians. It is here that they built their first permanent city, the capitol of Tolui, from which the Emperor Jingham rules, surrounded by his Council of Advisors, taken from the various nations held under their rule.  

Stoasue

A dense jungle and swampy delta. Stoasue is a vassal state of Pelonia, ruled over by a 'Queen' whose title carries the same weight as a Vassal Govenor.  

Eshen

While they claim to have conquered Eshen, in reality Pelonian rule only holds sway in the western most city states, Particularly Horkhudagh and Chingay. Eshen is too vast for any nation to effectively police it, even Pelonia.

Military

Cavalry

With centaurs the primary specices among Pelonians it is no surprise that their military relies heavily on these units. Pelonia uses its mobility to strike where they are least expected, and keep their foes on the march and tired.  

Necromancy

Pelonian elves are skilled in the use of magic and they use this skill to employ the School of Necromancy to the battlefield. While Pelonians find the undead abhorrent they hold no compunction against using it on their foes, slaughtering enemy towns and then raising them and releasing them to terrorise their own country side and take up valuable resources from Pelonias foes.  

Falconry

Pelonians use airborne aid when scouting or fighting small battles. Most units contain a Falconer whose animal companion takes to the skies and is trained to alert their masters to enemy forces. Some even share a bond, allowing them to see through the eyes of their companions. Pelonian druids often take the form of birds in order to achieve the same function.
